  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Scraped the crap out of my rim

I parked my G70 like a butthead this morning and scraped the living crap out of the front right rim. As it turns out, I got suckered into purchasing the wheel protection insurance from the dealer. I was wondering if anyone else had also purchased this insurance and how well the rim could be repaired cosmetically.

I have a sport model, so it has the black chrome rims. I don't see there being much that can be done. So pissed at myself.

There are other threads here about wheel damage. Do a search and you should find them. Some have been very happy with the results but I don't recall black wheels.

You'll find out for sure once your insurance takes care of it.

Follow up with your dealer about the wheel protection service... You might be covered because you paid for it. Let us know what they say.

The wheels on the G70 Sport are NOT black chrome. They are some, code yet to be determined exactly, painted color. Black chrome is a chemically activated process just like regular chrome.
Most of the dealer sold wheel insurance policies just replace the wheel. For those who didn't purchase the wheel/tire insurance when you hit a curb, pothole or whatever this is a covered loss on your insurance policy. I would just file a claim, insurance would pay all costs exceeding my deductible, $250 for me and in most cases they will pay for a alignment as well if you hit something hard enough to damage a wheel as there could be suspension damage. FYI.

Most wheel repair shops can correct bent rims and repaint or powder coat for less than $250. I’ve had it done once and after tire rotations I’m not even sure which wheel that was fixed. I paid $110 several years ago. Not sure I’d ever turn in a claim to my insurance company for such and give up my claim free discounts for the next several years on something low cost.

Your claim free "discount" is not free, if you dig down you will find that folks without "accident free" are paying less than you. I retired from that industry & Unless you are in a bind and have some ridiculous deductible like $1000.00 then most people are not like you and they do turn in and use there insurance when they need it. No reason not to, you pay for it, why not use it. Also on a car with a production date of two years or less you would get a new wheel, not a repaired one. So depending on the car the wheel is $450 - $900 and if edge of rim is damaged the tire "could" have structural damage & the insurance company will replace your tire so another $300 and alignment $100.00. So your "discount" did not save you $1000 + dollars. You pay for insurance, use it when you need it.

Your correct you pay for it, and the more you use it the more you pay at renewal time too. If you were in the industry then your aware of this. When an auto insurance company runs my insurance rating and history, not having prior claims earns a discount with most carriers. Qualifying for all the discounts being offered is just good business sense. Not saying it’s not possible for someone with prior claims might also get a good auto rate due to all the variables and geographical differences but I don’t think I’m paying more as you infer just because I’m claim free? My point was I don’t use insurance for small ticket items, scraps, scratches and wheel dings if a wheel shop will fix my rim like new for $125 or so. The wheel shop I used prior for my Mazda rebuilt my wheel, finish and all and returned it to me. I marked the wheel prior so know I got back what I gave them. I only scrapped a curb so alignment was not an issue in my case. If you damaged a wheel so severe it may have structural integrity issues, reputable wheel shops won’t touch those. My auto deductible is $500 so creating a claim for an item less than $200 for repair won’t get me anything. To each his own when deciding what works and makes financial sense.

I am a 1,000$ deductlble person. I have no interest in filing a claim for a few hundred dollars. My concept of insurance for me, auto and home, is to protect me from substantial or catastrophic loss. I can write a check for hundreds of dollars. I cannot write a check for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I don't think I hit the curb hard even for the alignment to be affected. It was essentially like the Titanic grazing the side of iceberg. LOL.

About a 1/4 of the "lip" going around the rim got scratched up pretty good--typical curb rash. It just looks really bad because the silver of the metal is exposed now.

If the wheel insurance just replaces the wheel, do you think they'll let me keep the original as a spare? Obviously, I'd pay for the extra tire to put on the replacement wheel, but I'd be nice to have a real spare, although it'd only be useful if I got a front flat since the rears are a different size.

Worth a try. With wheel insurance if this is thru your dealer, they probably will make the call to allow you to keep the old wheel or not? If you can keep it, might be worth finding your local wheel repair shop to see about a repair so you can have a backup. They will weld up the curb rash area, put it on a machine to turn that area down like new and then re-finish.

Yeah, I did this twice and my insurance dropped me. Don't do it.

For realzez. Had 2 wheel replacements in one year for $$$ and got a letter the following January.
