  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm noticing something like a metal-on-concrete-like scraping/clanging noise when I'm driving slow (15mph or less). I looked under the vehicle and nothing was dragging or hanging although it really sounded like someone was dragging rebar on the concrete underneath my car or something. It also seemed random, speeding up, slowing down, or going over bumps didn't seem to affect it at all (apart from going above 15 which it disappeared altogether).

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or if I could get some diagnosis help before taking to the mechanic. I just bought this car 3 days ago and I really hope its nothing serious.

Brakes worn maybe? Actually, now that I think about it, I had an issue a number of years ago that's similar to what you describe...
I had driven on a gravel road and after a while like a few weeks, I heard a scraping noise when going slow. Looked around underneath and nothing. Eventually I went to look at how much brake pad I had left, and sure enough! There it was. A gouge in a complete circle around my rotor from a tiny pebble that got stuck to the brake pad. The pebble was in contact with the rotor but at higher speeds there was no noise. At lower speeds, what I was hearing was the pebble scraping away at my rotor. Just something to check.

I'll do that, I hope that's the case! thank you for the quick reply

^^^ No problem!
I apologize for taking some time to reply, my family wanted to take the new car on vacation. I didn't notice anything wrong with the brake discs on either side of the vehicle, I'm thinking about taking it to the mechanic later on this month to see what they say.

I am dealing with the exact same sound noise with similar conditions. Any update on what it was?

I honestly forgot about it after a while and nothing bad had has happened since. I'm not sure if it's even still occuring. I can check later though.

It’s incredibly loud, windows up with radio going and can easily hear it. Kids 7 or 8 houses up turned their head as I was approaching. Happens at low speeds.

Oh wow you might want to get that checked, mine was very quiet. Check your brake rotors for scratches but I would honestly take it to a mechanic if it's that loud

It's a new car under 1k miles and was going to take to the dealer, but it is like 45 minutes away. Nervous to drive on it TBH. Thanks for the reply.
Meet me know what they say

Hello Atlinamator: Have you found out any more information for the scraping sound? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I have 420 miles on my GV70 with the same exact symptoms.

I have a Hyundai Genisis that's still a Hyundai, not any of the G series (although I really wish I had a G series). The sound, to my knowledge, has gone away. I suspect it was a rock or some debris that got caught in my breaks and made noise until it got ground away. Ive had no issues with the car related to the drivetrain since.

Thank you for the response. I will check the roters. But I think this may be in the rear differential. Thanks

It’s the brake dust shield. Stupid cheap ass metal. It’s rubbing the back of your rotor. Get under the car and bend it away from the rotor and it’ll be gone. My GV70 did the same.

I had similar issue, found out that my front rotor had warped.

Had something that sounds kind of like this on one of my cars a few years ago..It turned out to be a stone caught up in one of the brakes..Have quick peek at your rotors and see if there is a small "scoring" mark on any of them..
