  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I MacGyver'ed my own solution to this. There used to be a roughly 13" air silencer in front of the throttle body. I capped off the inlet with a vinyl trailer ball hitch cover, made rigid with a PVC coupler inside it (necessary, because the flange coming off the main intake is flimsy rubber). I used a hose clamp, painted black to match, to hold everything in place. Have used it for a few weeks now and several freeway trips. Everything is staying tight and in place. My last freeway trip, I got 29.5 mpg (4.6 motor), and that was w/o using CC due to heavy congestion. I'm sure w/CC and moderate speeds, I could've exceeded 30 mpg. Keep in mind, I have already removed the flapper and sponge and installed a K&N as well.

I have been thinking about doing this too. Thanks for posting the solution. Does the car now make it little bit more engine noise under full throttle?

Removing the flapper and sponge produced more intake sound, for the better. Removing the secondary air silencer may have added slightly more sound, but not much. Removing the turtle shell over the engine allows a little more sound to come thru as well. All to the good, IMO.

BTW, there are 2 other intake noise attenuators I saw, as well. One, I call "the mushroom," which is to the left of the throttle body, as you face the engine. The other I call the "Altoids can," which is on the bottom side on the intake tube. This is an extremely restrictive intake tube. I wonder if just the tube from the 5.0 full intake system that we've seen on these forums would be a stock replacement?

I used to have a G35, which also had one of these funky air silencers in the intake tube. Our solution at the time was to install the 350Z tube, which didn't have it. We need something like this for our cars.

Just so you know, you are playing Russian roulette with your engine and your engine warranty with the K&N air filter.

Here's an interesting test on air filters: http://home.roadrunner.com/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

One of the most telling statements from the above test is: After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt.

I've spent a lot of time dealing with engine installations in off-highway equipment. An oil wetted filter does not begin to protect an engine like a proper paper filter (and I own one of the few cars produced in the last fifty years with an oil wetted filter).

Hey I just removed the "mushroom" attenuator and I can feel a decent increase in throttle response and pep..i used a radiator cap and clamp to do this. I will be removing the bigger silencer like you did tomorrow. thanks for the post.

interesting, I did this before I saw this post. I removed the sponge, the mushroom "can" and the long resonator, the only one that isn't removable without cutting or breaking it is the bottom "altoids" can
