  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a question about the serpentine belt on my 2016 Genesis Sedan 3.8 base.
On my car, the belt has grooves on both sides. That is correct it has grooves on the inside and the outside.
Could someone with a 2016 check their belt and see if it is the same? Also look at the tensioner pulley and see if it has grooves or is flat. Mine is flat. That means the belt has grooves and the pulley is smooth.
I have been working on cars a long time before the serpentine belt came out and have never seen a grooved belt going around a flat pulley.
Anyone have any ideas. Searches haven't turned up anything.

Thanks

interesting, my 2015 belt is also grooved on both sides but the tensioner has grooves too, it is not smooth. A bit odd they would change that after one model year. Probably does not matter as the tensioner is not applying any drive force.

Thanks balfor. It makes sense to me that the tensioner would be the same pattern as the belt. Grooved for Grooved side of belt and smooth for the back side of a belt that is smooth. I see a trip to the dealer coming.
Thanks again.

On mine, the tensioner pulley is flat, and the belt has grooves on both sides. The belt is made in Germany.

Whoever does the serpentine belt engineering for Hyundai is world class in my book. My 2006 Sonata got its belt replaced late last year. After 70k miles, but nearly 9 years of use, it showed virtually no wear. The grooves were not even cracked.

Thanks for the responses. I went to the dealer today to get some filters and ask the service advisor about the belt and tensioner. He didn't know so we checked 3 other Genesis and they were all like mine so I guess it is OK.
By the way, they (Keffer Hyundai, Matthews, NC) has a 5.0 Genesis on the floor. I didn't get a chance to find out anything about it, I was trying to keep up with the SA at the time.
