  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I test drove a 2.0T and a 3.8 yesterday and the salesman told me to drive it like I stole it.. so I got on it a little bit for each car

The 2.0T was very enjoyable and I liked the low-end power it had to offer

For the 3.8, at about 65MPH the wheel started to shake pretty violently, however.. there were after market rims on the car and the salesman said it was because of the wheels it was shaking so much

It's very possible he was being honest with me, but I figured I'd come on here to make certain.

thanks

How big were the rims? They could affect front end geometry if they went too large...

i want to say they were 20's

For the 3.8, at about 65MPH the wheel started to shake pretty violently,

Shakes at speed is a clear indication of an out-of-balance wheel/s. If you want this car ask them to put the stock wheels back on...after they check the balance. If you are into looks and care less about performance, keep the heavy-ass big wheels but have them rebalance them...and check the alignment.

I had the same problem in my Azera that was the result of a bent rim. The vibration was worst at 55 mph and almost went away past 50.

If you are thinking of getting THAT 3.8, with those aftermarket wheels and tires, I would tell the dealer to do a "RoadForce" Balance and Correction. (Not just a RoadForce check).

Don't know what RoadForce is. go into google and punch in "RoadForce" or you can go into google and punch in "Hunter GSP 9700" and it will tell you all about it and how it corrects things even when the other balancers say the tires are inbalance.

Had it done on my Continental which had some shake at 55 to 60mph, (tires were in perfect balance, but still shook), and the Roadforce correction fixed it perfect.

I have a 3.8 A/T and I drive 65 to 80mph daily since I commute to work on the highway. So far, I've had no shaking like this. It actually rides very smoothly... smoother than either of my Tiburons did. I'm willing to bet it was the shotty job they did with the wheels.

I had same problem with my 2.0 T after i get for my second maintenance..... turned out the people who should be knowing these cars the best, didn't know it well enough. They rotate the wheels but didn't realize that the front ones are slightly smaller than the rear ones ....... grrrr

Not owning the coupe, I didn't know it either. Reminds me of the time I was at a local coffee shop, and was talking with a guy who had a small Mercedes coupe (or was it a convert). You know the car. The small TWO SEATER that Mercedes sells. Guy was telling me that the car did not feel right. I looked at the tires, and saw that they were different sizes. Looked in the door sill, and saw that the larger tires should be on the back and smaller tires on the front. Yep!! When they were "rotated" they were really rotated. Owner said he was taking it back the next day.

Another one! A few cars back, I had a 2003 Mercury Marauder. The Marauder takes 235/50/18 on the front and 245/55/18 on the back. For a while, nobody was making the rear size, so some guys were putting the front size on the rear, or they were putting some other size on both the front and rear, keeping the front and rear the same. OK, that worked on the 2003, but on the 2004 (last year made) it caused problems because the 2004 warning would come up that the traction control (and perhaps the ABS) was out of order. The 2004 computer knew what the difference between the revs of the rear compared to the front. (BFG started making limited runs of the rear size again, so 2004 owners should not have that problem again).
