  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rock hit the glass just above the windshield. Entire thing shattered! Kinda seems like a design flaw20181018_114936.webp20181018_114939.webp

Sorry to hear. Looks like the Hyundai tradition continues

That is safety glass which is on every car for the past few decades, it's made to shatter into small pieces so you don't end up with large jagged shards of glass flying around in an accident, all the windows on a car are like this besides the windshield which still has some kind of lamination in it to keep it together (to a point) when it cracks/breaks.

Oh really? Is this a common Hyundai issue?

Safety glass makes sense. Just sucks with the amount of gravel on our roads in the winter. Seems like I'll go through a few of these every year :(

I heard it was also happening on the Santa Fe, never had an issue with mine and it got hit by plenty of rocks.

This post is from EDMONTON folks... I have two sons that lived there for 5yrs before moving to Calgary and according to them, flying stones cracking glass is a common occurrence. They don't use road salt during their long winters, but still use a combo of sand and small stones on their roads for traction. If your car has glass anywhere, it's likely to get hit with a stone at some point if you drive on highways. Stones break glass (and rock breaks scissors... or was it paper??)

Ouch...I’d hate to see the hood chips.

They started using some sort of liquid salt mix last year so definately less rocks/gravel around. It was 24c/75f here yesterday so definately no gravel on the roads yet. Quote for glass insurance was $400 a year so not sure if I will get it or not. Anyone know what's under this glass. Will I need to worry about leaks or anything while I wait to get this fixed?

Hope they fix it well. I think there were a lot of reports of spontaneous cracking with this particular panel in the 2015/2016 genesis so it'll be interesting to see whether there are any reports of this for the G70, but cracking due to flying debris is another form of bad luck, sorry OP.

One of the main reasons I am shopping for the advanced 3.3T trim without the sunroof, besides potential creaking noises and less headroom. Just one less thing to potentially go wrong with the car.

Good point but the sunroof is low on the list of potential problems with any cars these days.

Not sure of that, you should check out the huge thread on the 2015/2016 genesis (which is nearly identical to the current G80) forum regarding the creaking/spontaneous shattering of the sunroof occurring on these models. There's quite a few reports not just for H/K but other brands as well, especially for pano roofs.

To clarify, that is the Panoramic roof that is most troublesome. Regular sunroofs ave rather trouble free. That is true on other brands also.

So far, I've not had any problems with 2 different cars, but, I never open them either. I would think repeated use would stress things more. Of course, no matter the size, rocks and glass don't mix well.

Conventional sunroofs more prone to leaks though. I have a five year old Azera with a pano and never had any issues noise or otherwise.

Pano roof takes up less headroom as well.

I guess that's right. I've gotten so used to the abundant daylight, I would hate to give it up. Almost never open it but shade open year round except in extreme summer heat.

I've had no issues with my 15 Genesis pano roof as of yet, and I do open it on occasion. Back in the early 2000's I had a Maxima with a "sky view" roof that blew outward/upward while on the highway. It was not a sunroof, essentially just a skylight that was fixed, providing natural light to the interior. Nothing hit it that I was aware of, it just decided to fail. A risk inherent to fixed glass on a vehicle apparently. I'll take the risk since I love the natural light and open feeling the pano roof provides.
