  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey all. I have a 2009 3.8 v6. I typically drive with one hand on the shifter...no real reason, my hand just falls there naturally. Anyway, I cut the hell out of my finger the other day, and on closer inspection, I noticed the chrome trim on the shift knob was peeling, and cut my finger pretty good. Has this happened to anyone else? (Not the cutting, but the peeling?)

I'm assuming I can get this replaced at a dealership...

Something like this happened with the inside driver's door handle in my '06 Azera. The chrome/plastic plating peeled and left a sharp edge. I found a number of complaints about this online. Rather than getting the handle replaced I used some fine sandpaper to smooth the sharp edge.

Small place on my Mercedes door handle did the same thing. Dealer fixed it.

I had the trim on the inside door handle peel and cut me and now I can feel the trim coming part on the shift handle in about the 2 o-clock position. The door handle trim was replaced under warranty.

I own the 2009 Genesis (original owner). This week I noticed the chrome strip on the gear shifter is chipping off and yes, it is sharp. That also solves the mystery of why my right THUMB has developed what look like razor cuts for no apparent reason and has gotten very sore. I had no idea that was what was doing it until now. I had a hard time finding a replacement for the original. I finally located one from Korea on eBay and waiting on arrival and my husband will replace. My car just went out of warranty in the past couple of months.

Good luck! Thanks too for adding to an existing thread and not starting a new one needlessly.

Happened to the passenger door handle on my 2010. Replaced at no cost. Personally I think this coating material looks cheap. The look of the door handles on a 2012 are much nicer.

Update: I just received shipment confirmation from Korea. It will take up to a month to arrive but it is also FREE SHIPPING. Will update when it arrives and is successfully installed.

Rebecca, my shift knob has done the same thing, and is pretty sharp. Guess I'll order a new from an online Hyundai Dealer if I can find the part.

Good luck! Hope you get yours replaced. I 'just' went out of warranty so I did not even try the dealership, even though they have been great with warranty work.

You may have read my 2009 Hyundai Genesis gear shift knob (the trim) was cracked and chipping, leaving small razor cuts on my right thumb. Hyundai Factory Replacement shift gear knob arrived direct from South Korea. My husband installed and it is perfect! I take excellent care of my car and this 2009 model only has 30,000 miles on it and had JUST come off warranty. Not easy finding this part!

had the same thing happen to the shift knob in my 12 R Spec. Sanded it out the first time but now it's back again. Guess I need to stop by and see the dealership.

I've recently bought a 2012 R-Spec and the shift knob is worn, rough and needs replacement. The dealer said since it's normal wear they won't help, other than telling me the entire shifter needs to be replaced. If this is true it's not going to happen, but does someone have a fix or part number?

^I can't speak for the R-Spec, but on my 4.6 I had the shift knob off a couple of times, and I could literally pull the shift knob up and off of the shifter (with some force). Again, that was on my 4.6 but I can't imagine the 5.0 having a one-piece shift knob/shifter design (of course, crazier things have happened between model years).

I believe your dealer either doesn't know, or is simply trying to make extra money off of you.

All shift knobs come off the same way. Just pull up on it as hard as you can and hopefully don't smash your hand into the ceiling. That thing is really on there.
