  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Didn't know where to post this. Own a 4.6 w/tech and less than 500 miles. This morning I stopped at a store on the way to work (flat surface, pulled straight in) started up, stepped on the brake and could not shift out of park. I shutdown, restart and can now shift. This is the second time this has happened. Both times after restarting the Nav screen reads no USB device connected (but it is).
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas!
Thanks...

Yes, once. Also happened to an other guy on this group. The ESC light was on at that time. Like you, we shut it off, turned back on, and the ESC lamp went out, and it would shift out of park.

When it happened to me, as luck would have it, I was at the dealer, so I called the Service Manager over, and he saw that the ESC lamp was on, and car would not go out of Park. He also saw that it worked when I restarted car. So far, it has not happened to me a second time.

Were you using a flash drive when it happened? Both times it happened I was using one.

No. Just got in car, started it up to drive off, and would not get out of Park. After I pointed it out to the Service Manager. I shut engine off, then restarted, and everything worked fine. Only happened that once.

I'm a new 4.6 owner just joining the site. Bought mine on Memorial Day. I've had 3 instances of an ESC light/locked shifter since then (29 Jun, 12 Jul and 22 Jul). My situation's the same...ESC light on after start-up, shift lever locked in park, ESC light clears after a re-start (I've had nothing plugged into the USB).

Fortunately I carry a code reader (old habit from my previous car). Just for grins I checked for codes when I got the ESC light and sure 'nuff I'd popped a U0101pd (Lost Comm w/TCM) and I've been getting the same reading each time. Since it is only a "pd" code it's not tripping the CEL and it obviously clears itself when there are no repeat occurances after several engine cycles.

My guess is the ESC is trying to communicate with the TCM before the "network" has booted up at engine start. When it can't communicate it shuts down the ESC, triggers the light and locks up the tranny.

New 2010 Genesis V8 sedan, tech package, owned less than a month 600 miles +/-

This morning started, got ESC, AUTO HOLD, and one other light, and shifter locked in park. Shut down, restart all OK.

I had disconnected USB thumb drive the night before after shutting down.

"happy" to report that it happened to me this morning @ the gas station after filling it up. ESC and brake lights were up, couldn't shift from P. Cycled the engine and it was back to normal. No biggie. We'll see if it starts happening on a regular basis.

Happened to me several times and each time and got a command something like "unlock before shifting". Could not find any button labeled "unlock", so punched "park" button, shut off engine, and then restarted, after which everything was fine. Still haven't figured out definitely what causes the problem, but sometimes I forget to punch "park" before shutting off engine, and that might be the cause when I restart the engine. The only "unlock" button I know of is located on the left side of the shifter, but pressing it did not have any effect. I've always had to shut the car down first, and then upon restart, the car shifted without any problems.
