  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a shimmy and vibration in my car. I’ve had 3 sets of new tires, and a set of new rims plus all balanced at least 30 times at different shops.

I replaced brakes and rotors all the way around.

You can feel it all through the car even in the steering wheel which will shake some times like the tires are out of balance.

Ive has it back to the dealer many many times and “they can’t duplicate the problem” even after I say drive it it starts about 40-45 mph and sort of eases off at 80mph

I feel like it’s a drive shaft or u joint issue but of course the dealer has checked and finds 0. They did replace the needle bearings??about 2 years ago. It got rid of the random noise it made.

2015 3.8

Anyone

I have the same problem ...

I feel like it’s a hub, bearing , u joint or suspension issue. Dealer blames my after market rims which is bullshit. Im having it checked elsewhere.

Do you have the correct hub centering rings on the wheels (or do the wheels have the correct hub bore)?

As I wrote on other Genesis sites, have a GOOD alignment man check the rear lateral arms on both sides. If just SLIGHTLY out of spec will cause rear end shimmy and wandering, maybe even create hood vibrations at high speed (over 110mph).

Let me know what you find out, I’m interested going to do some checking myself as well..

You may want to check the rear differential that may cause such vibrations. if under warranty, get it replaced.

It was the driveshaft. Took it to another dealer and they were able to diagnose the issue right away.

I have a vibration in my 2016 3.8 sedan. I've had it just over a year. It was there when I test drove the car and I mentioned it to the sales rep. He said it was an alignment issue and had it serviced and, it seemed to disappear. It came back later and I had the tires rotated a couple of times. It was intermittent.
While shopping for tires, I read complaints about similar issues related to inferior rubber, so I assumed a new set of tires would fix it.
Recently, I got a new set of Continental Extreme Sport tires put on. The first day of my commute, the vibration was back, but it seemed to vanish as the drive progressed. Again, it wasn't consistent. Since I had a new set of tires, I assumed it had to be a mechanical issue, so I booked a service appt. with the local Hyundai dealer. They told me the *first thing* I needed to doe was to replace two bent rims and tried to charge me over $1,000 to replace them. Since it only happens during the first few minutes of my commute, I suspected this was bogus, so I went to Discount Tire to ask about it.
The manager there told me that the Continental Extreme Sport has an issue with vibration when cold. Not all of them, but it's a known problem. Once the tires warmed up, the car rode smoothly as glass (and really quietly!). But it was a nuisance, so I switched to a set of General Gmax AS05s.

And I have the exact same problem.
So this is now three different sets of tires. What is it about this car that could cause vibration only on cold tires?

Is your genesis awd? Also these cars have driveshaft issues.

No. Sorry, I should have noted that. It's RWD.

I also recently purchased a set of the GMax AS-05's. What a mistake. They are awful when cold. Shake like hell. Once warm... smooth as butter.

I'm going to start a thread on my recent tire experience. Not a good one.

That's just weird. I had the same experience with the Contintal Extreme tires. I switched to the GMax thinking it couldn't possibly recur on two different brands, but apparently, it did. And the Generals on my car aren't quite as smooth when warm as the Contis were. But they don't shake as badly when cold either.
So the difference in performance from cold to warm is more um...extreme on the Continental Extreme tires. Maybe the name is a warning. :)
