I am debating buying my first Genesis sedan. The car is a 2012 4.6 V8 with 115,000 miles. It is Black with the chocolate leather interior and has the Tech package and navigation.. The negotiated price is $9500. The owner was is a salesman and the mileage is mostly highway and the car sounds without any bearing noise. The front end also seems solid. Tires are about 50%. I have been trying to read through threads about higher mileage cars and some of them start to get a little scary after 150,000 miles. I know he is below KBB so the 'DEAL" theoretically is good but I'm wondering if there is anything else I should be looking for. Thanks in advance.
 
I think that's very rare car - 2012 4.6 V8. And 4.6 is EFI engine, not like 5.0 GDI, so you will not have carbon build up problem and oil leaking problem with early 5.0 GDI engines.

Ask seller if transmission was flushed and spark plugs were replaced around 100,000 miles?
 
This could be a great car and give you many miles of trouble free service. The next question you need to ask yourself is what if it doesn't? I'm a little fearful of high mileage cars with a low production, limited parts availability, almost non-existent aftermarket parts and a low level of understanding and service expertise.
My advice would be if you are considering a high mileage vehicle also consider parts and service availability for the times that you need it.

He has a bunch of maintenance records and the miles are highway (traveling salesman job).

That is where I am at with this. It seems to have been a rather worry free car for him and he is selling it because his company forced him into a new factory lease. This would be my first Genesis which is why I joined the forum. My local pick N Pull rarely ever gets these cars so I know I will be buying dealer parts or on-line. Is there anything particularly I should be looking for other than the stereo problems I have been reading about?

My 2012 4.6 like many of these cars, has been mostly trouble free, but not perfect. My ABS actuator (HECU unit) failed a year ago in the middle of hurricane Irma evacuation. :thumbdown: The $2500 replacement was covered 100% by extended HPP warranty.

The stereo (silent-amp bug, head unit failure) problems were limited mostly to the 2009-2010 Tech trim cars. I think mine's done the "silent amp bug" thing twice since I bought it ~4 years ago? It will reset after 30 mins key off; the internal circuit breaker inside the amp resets when the caps discharge.

These cars are cheap to buy, but expensive to repair at the dealer (only 1 source for parts, high markups, etc.) unless you have an extended warranty. If you're good with tools or have a good local mechanic, then DIY with access to parts from LKQ/Copart can keep costs way down.

For $10-12k it's a fantastic car that will probably give you another 50-100k of mostly trouble free miles. But when things break you could be dropping $2k-$3k per repair at the dealer (radar cruise module $3k, ABS HECU $2.5k, head unit $3k). As long as you're prepared for this, go for it!!

Did the previous owner have a warranty? If so see if it is transferrable.
My only issues I have ever had with my 12' 3.8, ABS, TouchScreen Freeze and rear door lock not locking which cause alarm not to set. All covered by warranty. I am almost at 160k miles all hwy every bit of it!!! Im very happy with my purchase. I love working on cars too so turning a wrench does not scare me.
If you feel comfy get it or see if he is FLEXIBLE with price if there is no warranty of any kind.
Do a pre-buyer inspection at a Hyundai dealer by the both of you splitting the cost of the inspection. If you find something, he can come off the price.

$9500 is the lowest he will go. It is a 4.5 hour drive to get the car. He is not under any warranty. I also like turning a wrench but the slim aftermarket and the idea of dealer parts is beginning to scale me off. I'm sure the car has been great for him but in my mind now is when the problems will start popping up.
 
I had a 2011 like the one you are considering. I put over 200,000 miles on it. Best car I have ever owned. If the owner has records showing transmission service and oil/filter changes then I think the car can give 100,000 more miles with proper service. I miss mine. Also, if you purchase, use only OEM oil filters.

Did you take the VIN to your local Hyundai dealer and pull the service history yet? Check to see if any recalls are open or major repairs were done? 100k mile service?

If that all checks out and it's really a clean car at $9500, then buy it with the understanding that he's giving you your first $2000 repair included for free. :thumbsup:
