If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Trying to decide between a 2018 Rav4 and a 2015 genesis and so torn between the two. I love the genesis but I don’t know much about Hyundai and want to make sure it’s going to be a car that last and not run into a lot of problems. Thoughts? Opinions or advice? TIA

What are you looking for in a car?

Hyundai has a very good quality reputation. I'm on my 5th one now and the main reason is they have been superior quality compared to any other brand I've had.

To me, the deciding factor is your use, needs, wants in a car. Do you want to drive a compact SUV or smooth luxury with lots of goodies. If you get the AWD, it comes with things not available on the Rav4 like heated rear seats, heated steering wheel. Ultimate as HUD, all have rear windows and rear passenger sunshades

If you are in your 20's, probably the Rav4. if a bit older and like comfort, smooth long rids, no question the Genesis is you kind of machine to pamper yourself.

I really just want something reliable, comfortable and low maintenance. Something I am going to look forward to driving everyday.

Thanks for the response. I am in my late 20s finishing up my graduate degree. I am torn between the chance of driving a beautiful nice car or something more practical like the RAV. I feel like I would be disappointed if I didn’t go with the genesis because it drives and feels like a luxury car.

I think you have to ask yourself a basic question. What kind of car do I want...what are the basic features, performance, mileage I need/want? Seems to me, they are very different choices.

I drive a 5.0. I like the ride/luxury aspect of it. The mileage (20+) is reasonable as I'm mostly highway and it has plenty of giddyup. The only negative I have is that I wish it was a little more nimble in cornering (it's a heavy car). But that's a comparison and trade off with an Audi in my opinion.

Two very different rides. Any car can have problems, but these are both good reliable choices. The Genesis, being used, will not come with a full warranty transfer, unless it's a CPO. Personally, I like driving our Genesis enough, that I just go out for drives, with no destination in mind.

Just go with your gut feelings. I like my Genesis but it will not be as reliable as a Toyota. It also has more tech than the RAV4 that could go wrong.

If you want a nicer car overall then go with the used Genesis, but if you are concerned about reliablity then go for the newer Toyota.

Before going with the Toyota, you should Google "Rav4 oil problems". toyota has had problems with excessive oil consumption and sludge build up with some of it's engines.
I bought my 15' Geny 3.8 new and now have 23,000 miles with never having to add oil and only a few minor issues fixed under warranty.

Obviously, we're going to biased here toward the Genesis Family. It all comes down to what you need in a vehicle. Something to bum around in while carrying cargo (bicycles, boxes of stuff, etc), the RAV4 is your best option. But if you aiming for a vehicle that competes with midsized sedans from BMW and Mercedes Benz (at a fraction of the cost), a Genesis is in your future.

I'd take the genesis luxury and tech over a Rav 4 any day, this is coming from a Toyota guy.

If your torn between rides, wait as long as you can and save some money in the car you're currently driving. While the two cars in question are apples to oranges, they have the same intention. I like all cars and when I am looking for a new car, I do not categorize my search on Autotrader. I put in the max price and look at what is available to me. Take that with a grain of salt, I have had 14 cars in the last 5 years...

Also, don't be close minded to traveling. I bought my Genesis in Minneapolis, 600 miles from where I live. The deal was right and took my chances. Good luck with what you decide.

My 2015 Genesis Ultimate has required far less maintanence than my wife's 2015 Sienna XLE Premium. In 25,000 miles she's had multiple sliding door recalls, AC blower motor replaced, and overall, Toyota's have the ride of a tin can. Absolutely zero insulation for sound/road noise. We're selling it soon and going for Lexus GX460 (Luxury trim)

In 49,000 miles my Genesis has been great. Just oil changes, and my OCD has noticed a couple things (sunroof noise and driveshaft noise) that have both been addressed no problem. Just get a CPO Genesis and that'll give you piece of mind with that extended coverage.

I will say, if you need something bigger, forget the Rav4 and look at a 2015-2016 GX460. You can find them in the mid to high $30s. Lexus' CPO gives you 6 years bumper to bumper coverage (unlimited miles) and you can add another 5 years on top of that. When we get my wife's GX it'll be covered (bumper to bumper) until around 2026. Extra coverage costs around $3k.

This way you get the Toyota reliability, practicality, towing ability, size, etc. but don't sacrifice the luxury features. Tech isn't as great but with the luxury trim you get adaptive suspenion, heated/cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, power folding third row, etc. And if you can find one with the driver's assistance package, you get adaptive cruise and front-facing camera.

I went from a 2006 4Runner which I absolutely loved but never really used it for its intended purpose. Sold it to a buddy in Colorado, sad its gone but he will get 10x more use out of it. Knew I wanted something comfortable yet fun. Camrys are nice but they are Camrys.... Sonatas were also nice but meh. You can get into a used Genesis for the same price of a new Camry, Accord, Optima, etc... but none really compared. Stumbled across the Genesis and fell in love immediately. I knew I would own one just had to find the right one. Keep at it and get what you want. Good luck with the search!

As others have said, two quite different cars, doubtful you'll be disappointed by either.

Did you know that the Genesis back seats don't fold down flat? There's only a ski pole pass-through.
I didn't get this car to move any large furniture, or for trips to Home Depot (my girlfriend's car is for that)....
It is certainly not a practical choice.
95% of the time I knew I'd be the only person in the car.
the other 5% is me driving with my gf to the store/dinner/dog park etc.
It's comfy for that.
Hell we even drove it to a cabin out of the city and it didn't have a problem carrying us and a cooler.
I went with the car that I would enjoy driving...

If you're into camping or other sports where you're going to pile stuff into your car and generally abuse it lol the Genesis may not be the best choice.
I got a 2015 AWD Genesis a few weeks ago and I've loved everything about it.
It's affordable enough now at the mid 20k you could get a jeep or something cheap for weekend camping too :D

cheers
