Show Off You Winter Wheel and Tire Setup!

Last week I just received the winter wheels I originally ordered with my car in November - I had ordered the 18x8" G004A (aka Fast Wheels F04) package , but they mistakenly received and installed the G005 package. For 2022-23 both were official accessories, but for 2023-24 they removed the G004A; fortunately for me, they were still available. I much prefer the G004A for the sportier look and for the ease of cleaning.

Before buying the official Genesis accessory winter package, I priced the same items from a number of local and online sources; I found that I could maybe save 15% at absolute best (likely under 10%), but that would be using a universal aftermarket TPMS that may or may not work. Given the included Genesis centre caps and the 5 year cosmetic warranty included in the official package, it was a no-brainer.

Both sets came with Continental VikingContact 7 in 225/45R18 square setup. We've had unusually mild weather so far this year - we received only our second snowfall today. I did get a chance to drive in the last snow in December, and the Contis seemed to be quite good (I was previously on Michelin X-Ice3 for the past 10 or so years).

On dry and wet pavement the Contis have impressed for traction and noise, but either the tires or the car has a tendency to shift weight mid-corner (feels like the sidewall flexing over) in a way that I didn't experience with the Michelins. I hope that's just the winter tires.

I like Konigs, typically pretty lightweight and not crazy expensive for what you get, or overpriced trash like many wheels out there.
 
I agree. Konig's flow formed wheels are giving Enkei a run for their money. Some of the newer ones look very nice and you can tell they have Enkei squarely in their sight. A few of them are frankly dead ringers. Heliogram looks almost identical to PF01 and weight practically the same, but 20% cheaper.

I have Dekagrams on my Miata and love them. Nice quality, super light!
 
I guess since I have to have All Seasons due to a fair amount of sub freezing temps here's mine, I doubt I'll get a dedicated Summer set, but never say never :) Conti DWS 06 plus in factory staggered size. If I do get a new wheel set it will probably be 18" Wedsports, miss them from my past Infiniti G.

I bought a used set of 18s for the 911 that I usually use in April/May; by June the roads are usually patched up. I have way too many wheels and tires in my garage and basement!

I hear ya man. I'm not sure what the plan is yet. So far the plan is to buy a killer wheel set for the summer/nice months. (Not too expensive as it is my daily driver.)

A set of wheels for just 2 months out of a year?! Now that is some serious specialization.

We currently have 5 sets of wheels shared between the two Stingers and G70, and I just bought a set of Enkei RPF1's yesterday. What I don't have are the stock 19's that came with our '21 G70 6MT. We took them off before we even left the dealer parking lot and sold them within a week. If this were a leased car, I'd hang on to them to put back on before returning the car. All 3 of these cars are keepers, so those heavy stock 19s are just gonna take up garage space. At 34 lbs rear and 32 lbs front (see below, minus 25/24lbs stock Michelin tires), they are wayyyy too heavy for the track. Heavy rolling stock with too little sidewall is a recipe for bent/cracked rims and blown tires in everyday driving over rough/broken pavement.

These RPF1 are 14 and 12 lbs lighter per wheel. That is a huge amount of rotational inertia and unsprung weight removed. And as long as the wheel is well made and load-rated properly, there is no downside to less weight. Better handling, quicker accel/decel, and less likelihood for sustaining road damage. Plus, as much as we swap wheel/tires for track events, our lower backs much appreciate the lighter weight as well.

Nice set, what specs are you running w/ those? I assume they clear the Brembos no prob? And yeah, I would like a bit more sidewall if I go w/ a summer set, so maybe a staggered 245/45/18 & 285/40/18 set might work out well depending on offsets available in the wheels I want.

18x8.5 ET40. I would've preferred ET35, so no spacer would be necessary on the front, but I happen to have a set of 73.1mm to 67.1mm hubcentric 5mm spacers already, so these should work just fine as well. It was such a good deal, I just couldn't pass up.

It clears the Brembos with plenty of clearance to the spokes. 5-6mm at the tightest spot, and that's without spacer.

as I mentioned in another thread, I love the look of your factory 19s, but that weight is just crazy. I don’t really love the look of mine, but I think we established that they are actually quite light, which makes them that much harder to justify replacing! 😳😭

I love your Enkeis, that model is also super popular for Miata racers. Nothing but positive feedback from that gang!

Very true. I'm all for having the right tool for the job. That's why we have so many sets of wheels.

Yes, I too like the looks of the OEM wheels that came with our G70 6MT. In fact, I like them better than the upgraded Sport Prestige wheels. On first glance, they actually look like they should be fairly lightweight, but as soon as we took them off at the dealer parking lot, I could tell they were hefty. Then after we got home and washed them up ready for sale, we pop them on the bathroom scale... :oops: Whoa nelly!

I've always been partial to the flow-formed Enkei's. You get close to the performance/weight of uber-expensive forged wheels, but at a fairly affordable price. Still, the RPF1 has been so wildly popular with the AutoX and club racers, Enkei is pretty proud of them. So they are priced accordingly. Well, when Konig became a subsidiary of YHI, whose brand porfolio includes Enkei, Konig was able to license Enkei's MAT flow-form process. That's when I started being interested in Konig's "gram" series wheels. In fact, I almost pulled the trigger on a set of Heliogram 18x8.5's, when these RPF1's popped up on my local radar. Either way, I would've been very happy.
 
So, I got to test out the winter tires for the first time today.
Not too shabby. They gripped well and held well. It's wasn't that snowy, so I will see how well they do in deeper snow.
But so far,....money well spent. (y)

I didn't realize that Enkei was related and that's where the flow-forming came to them from. I had a set of Konig Rewind 15x7" on my Datsun 260Z in the mid-2000s, and these are sooooo much lighter.

If I buy a set of aftermarket wheels for the G70, I'm thinking they will either be Konig "gram" wheels or Fast's new flow-formed lineup (like my winter set) - those are the only two that seem to offer nice light wheels at a reasonable price. I am partial to bronze wheels too. Our two sets of TFRs are bronze. If I had bought the Heliogram, they would've been bronze as well.

The SP wheels also don't do much for me looks-wise, but based on the reports I've read here, they are supposedly fairly lightweight, at least compared to other OEM wheels. The problem I'd have with them is that they are still 19s, larger than necessary to fit over the Brembos and forcing me to go with lower-profile tires. For the track, that's less of an issue. Even then, I could install the same lower-profile tires on 18s and have all the same benefits of better tire support, while being even lighter weight. Plus 18" tires are generally less expensive. For a daily driver, I have seen far too many bent/cracked rims to ever want to run 19s on public roads.

Only way I would run 19s is if I upsize to 6-pot Brembos and larger rotors up front. Not exactly out of the question, and I've been toying with the idea and doing some research. ;)
 
Today was another great test for my car and the dedicated winter tires. Slushy, snowy, messy roads and the car handled it with ease.
Money well spent.

I ever mention how much I love the G70 3.3t awd cars?!?! lol
