If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This week we got the winter blast but it was mainly just cold but we did have an hour of a slushy freezing rain hit. So my 2015 had a thinnish layer of ice coating the windshield and rear window. I forgot to bring an ice scraper so I remote started the car a couple of times toward the end of the work day to get things heated up. So when I got into the car, I turned on the rear defroster/mirror defroster. My drive is about 25 minutes so as I got halfway home I started to realize how horrible the rear defroster actually is. It barely made a dent in clearing the window. I know it works because I could see the lines slowly being melted away but it never cleared the window, so basically seeing any traffic behind me was based on using side mirrors, which were of course frozen in place and no indication that the mirror heaters were working or not.

So is anyone living in snow/ice areas having similar issues or is it just how this car is made to work?

I really hadn't noticed.... But I live in Houston TX, where I don't have to shovel my bad weather. Mine seems to work OK for fogging though.

Defogging works ok at best for mine. Still very slow to warm and clear things.

Agree. I bought my Genesis in the summer and I just noticed that the rear defroster is slow to work. On the other hand, I do like the automated method of the front defroster.

And I also noticed that my tires registered low pressure. No surprise there, but what is surprising is that they still haven't reset to a normal condition, even though I got the tire pressure up to 30 psi.

And my panoramic sunroof creaks more in the cold. I don't think the Genesis likes cold weather as much as my CVPI.

You need about 31 or 32 to reset to normal. That was my experience anyway.

I'm sorry to say but you are expecting too much from the defrost function. Especially if there was freezing rain/sleet on the window, it will take a very long time for you to notice a difference as it is not really made to melt ice off of the windows.

???

Pretty much every car I've ever owned (including KIA/Hyundai) were able to melt through pretty much any frozen precip with ease and quickly. I'm not talking about inches of snow that I clear off, but the underlying packed ice or snow. The Genesis so far hasn't had near the oomph that other cars have.

based on some of your previous comments about your tint, I would be willing to be it is your tint causing the problem.

when a rear window is tinted it actually helps the defrost process because the defrost grid is trapped between the glass and tint and it heats faster.

however if the tint is not properly installed, (or removed) the defrost grid can be damaged. any cuts or damage to the grid will cause it not to work correctly or completely fail.

IMO based on the fact that your rear tint is so bad that it blurs your view, I suspect the tint is having some effect on the defrosting efficiency.

FWIW my 2018 works very well, usually clears the windows within 1/2 mile, and does a damn good job of keeping the window dry in a light rain as well you can see the water steam off as it hits.

My 2016 does a terrible job on the rear window as well. I have my rear tinted, but I know none of the lines are damaged, as I can see each specific line heat through a fog event. I think its just an underpowered rear defroster.

My rear defroster works great, I have a IR film on the rear glass (not tint).

Your best bet is to get a thermal camera and inspect the grid.

that's cool but I have to say a little over the top nerd wise...

I barely need to use mine down here in FL, maybe once or twice to quickly burn off some morning dew. But I've noticed the tint on the back is getting that ripply (unclear) look to it, so will need replacing when the new tint gets done soon. Is there any benefit of IR film over ceramic, or is it simply a cost-saving in the end?

It seems anyone owning a Genny in your neighborhood, Sub, would be quite lucky lol.
You continue to solidify your position as the Numero Uno Genesis geek out here...
Thanks for all of your ongoing wisdom. Kudos! 👑

I used an IR film because I didn’t want to darken the rear window any. I have a sunshade if I want less light, but I’d rather maintain nighttime visibility.
I run 50% Wincos on the sides and sunroof though.

Perfectly sensible. Thanks, I was just curious.

With the ridiculous summer temps down here, my research has me leaning toward the Nanoflex Nano Carbon Ceramic (aka VampireTint) and prefer not to go too dark myself...
