  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2009 Genesis 4.6 Sedan.

Recently, the smart key, when pressed, will not lock or unlock the doors. I have to manually unlock the door with the key to get into the car.

When the door opens, the car is dinging.

I try to start the car, but an indicator message says to insert key into the smart key holder. (I cannot start car with key in my pocket) Once that is done, and the start button is pressed, the car starts. Everything is working fine: navigation, radio, and clock.

When I shut off the car, I remove the smart key and open the car door. The car is dinging and the indicator message says to remove key (which I already did and it is in my hand…). I notice a blue LED blinking near the smart key holder.

I think the dinging is happening because the car thinks the key is in the holder. Even when it is not. Because the car thinks the key is in the holder it will not remotely lock or unlock the car.

Can the key holder socket be cleaned, or repaired/replaced? Maybe one of the sensors could be dirty (?) Is replacement very expensive?

The battery in the smart key was replaced today. Unfortunately, I only have one smart key because I lost the other one. The smart key I do have is original, has seen better days, but has been working fine until recently.

Went to the dealership and they quoted me a 325.00 price for a new smart key (not including the key part which I have) That sounds really, really expensive.

Thanks in advance for your help!

They smart key did not work, so you replaced the battery, and it still does not work? Please explain.

300.00 is about right for a new smart key. If the other buttons work on the key then your key may be worn out.

The smart key was not remotely locking and unlocking the doors. Even after the battery replacement I am still getting same results.

Sorry for the confusion.

Earlier today I did get it to work. I had been sitting in the car for about 5 minutes with car running. Pulled key out of key holder and shut the car off. When I opened the door, no dinging.

If the battery is fresh, do not put the key in the holder. The holder is only for when the battery is dead.

I still don't understand what works and what doesn't. If the car starts OK with smart key in your pocket, but the buttons on the smart key to lock/unlock the car don't work or work intermittently, then the buttons are probably mechanically worn out. Try using the button on the outside door handle with the smart key in your pocket.

After getting in the car using the actual key I'll try to start the car but it won't start. It will tell me to insert the key into the key fob slot.

When trying the button on the door handle it does not respond to my pushing it.I know that it has worked in the past.

I really think it has to do with the key holder. Cannot locate what the blue blinking light means.

Your problem is the battery, or the electronics on the circuit board has been damaged or misaligned when you opened it up. Make sure that you put in the correct battery and that it is correct side up.

Also make sure you closed the smart key properly after you put it back together when changing the battery.

The smart key holder is only for when the battery is low/dead. Read the owner's manual.
