  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I KNOW how to use my 2023 G70 smart trunk and I DO hear it unlatching when I use it however, the trunk either flips up immediately, doesn’t flip up at all or flips up after 8-10 seconds. Any idea as to why the discrepancies? It does not appear to be weather related as it still does it in a 50 degree garage.

You have the non-powered trunk, and lifts open by the force of the air shocks, and they are not quite strong enough.

So if your trunk is manual and not automatic, seems the pressure in your gas hold-open struts might vary slightly with temperature changes which affects how well your trunk opens. Not sure what else might cause the differences you are seeing? I love my auto trunk, just when getting anywhere close to the back of the car I have to move quickly if I’m not wanting it to open on its own for it will beep twice before I’ve gotten by the trunk fully. 3rd beep and it is opening.

The non-powered trunk has NO SHOCKS; just a spring. If you have any kind of spoiler, that'd be enough to prevent it from opening reliably. My 2023 barely opens it from the closed position... but once it's a few inches from the closed position, it swings open quickly. It seems to struggle initially. And that was the exact same issue with our ex-2016 Optima SX-L, which half the time didn't fully open. Seems like Hyundai/Kia uses springs barely adequate for the job. Cars with a spoiler are doomed.

Finally, the 'auto' feature SUCKS. The chime is barely audible with any surrounding noise. And it takes forever to open. Ha ha. It's like 4 or 5 beeps, I think. The issue is that you might not hear the initial beeps, but at least all of my Hyundai/Kia vehicles always open after the 4th or 5th beep. I disabled the feature on both vehicles. The chime on the SF Calligraphy is even worse than the G70, many times the power hatch hitting me (ha ha). The 'auto' feature should have been designed better, like sticking a foot under the bumper, to avoid unwanted openings. This is one more of several useless features IMO, including the even worse rain-sensing wipers, which robbed me of the intermittent function. Oh well.

Yup and it’s not that uncommon

You might try spreading a little silicone lubricant on the trunk seal to reduce the "stickshon" between the trunk lid and the seal; especially during the winter.

Enjoy,

Very Good idea will do today!

Just came in from the garage!
👌 I had some 303 gasket conditioner in the garage. Simply spread it on the trunk gasket and it now works immediately without delay plus it no longer has a sticky gasket sound when the trunk lid separates from the gasket. So far so good now let’s see if it works when it’s cold and wet. Thank you for the help. Bet any silicone would work too!!

I'm glad it did the trick! It has helped on several vehicles over the years, but I haven't had an issue on my G70 yet...

Enjoy,

Oh well the trunk has been siliconed twice and has begun to make up its own mind about when to open. Doesn’t matter if it’s 50 degrees or 20 degrees. Bringing it in to the service Dept on Monday. Wanna bet it opens every time when I get there? 😂 I am dreading the “it works fine for us” report. At least it’s a minor issue and the only problem I have with my car.

Just investigated this for you. Ha ha. There are springs in there, to pop it open, and a 'shock', to slow it down as it opens (or it'd slam open). I just removed the black trim held by 2 push-pins (you push them about 3mm in with a 4mm allen wrench, or something similarly flat, to prevent damage to the plastic, until they 'click'. Then slide down the trim so it disengages the trunk cover, then just pull it out of the lower cavity. You can't really see the hinge from there, but you can see the spring and shock. Make sure both springs are properly latched. You'd need to remove the inner trunk liner to get to the shock and hinges. I'd NEVER take my car to a dealer for something that simple, but hope you have a better one than mine. Ha ha. I bet just lubing the hinges would do the trick. By the way, there's a lot of wasted trunk space in there; oh well. Good luck.

We’ll done sir and I thank you. However, I believe that by self repairing the problem I now own the problem. I’d rather Genesis keeps it 😂!!! BTW I do think their service Dept has seen this before and still may act as if they have not.

Yeah, if you're not handy, better let a dealer sort it out :). My guess is one of the springs is probably not hooked up, since mine opens perfectly fine. Doubt it's anything more serious than that, but it's always possible. Hopefully an easy fix. Good luck.

Took my G70 to Genesis of Manchester to take a peek at my finicky smart trunk. I definitely expected it to begin operating properly when I went to show the service advisor how it didn’t open properly. To my surprise it didn’t open unless I either coaxed it with my hand or closed a door which vibrates the car. Of course I received the obligatory “ well if we didn’t see it ourselves our mechanics wouldn’t believe it and this is a first we’ve seen this problem”. I also asked for a free alignment as my steering wheel was not centered. I was advised that they’d need to drive the car to validate the problem. When I received the call that my car was ready I was told that indeed a rear wheel was out of alignment and therefore they were able to correct my steering wheel under warranty. I was also told they would order a new trunk latch to repair the non opening problem. Ok so I felt a bit like I had to prove these things vs getting the happy to make it right vibe. However, service personnel were personable and welcoming. Laughed when I asked for a car to use for an hour. Oh well at least the alignment is great and I have hope on the trunk. BTW the idea in lubricating the trunk gasket was still a great idea and should have been done anyway.

Hey, is your latch the problem? I thought your trunk was unlatching, but just not lifting itself open, which was exactly the problem with my ex-Optima SX-L's smart trunk (same as the G70). And the reason for my possible solutions. Anyway, the latch is easier to deal with, since they don't have to tear your trunk panels apart. Good luck with the fix, and glad you also got your other issue taken care of. Hopefully no scuffs, scratches, dings, etc.

Yes you are correct indeed sir. It is also my opinion this won’t work either however at least they saw it happening. If the car were out of warranty I would have greased the trunk pistons and the trunk latch and seen how that worked. Oh well it’s free snd they are trying. Maybe in my fourth visit I’ll fill out the lemon law paperwork. Too scared to look for body damage so I won’t as I’d rather not know 😂 I’m scared 😱

My dealer specializes in messing up your pristine car, hence my snarky remarks... and it doesn't help I'm on the anal side. Ha ha. But hope yours is fine. If the trunk was unlatching fine, I'd have told them it's obviously not the issue, so leave it alone. But that tells me you're dealing with a person that doesn't have any mechanical sense:oops:. Keep us posted on your progress. Take care.

Took my car into Genesis yesterday to repair my not so smart Smart trunk. They replaced the bottom lock mechanism within 15 minutes of my arrival but could not wash my car as there was the usual 1 1/2 wait for the wash. Can’t figure that one out accept it’s not priority to wash customers’ cars. It never is any different at m dealer 1 1/2 to 2 hour wait. So far Smart trunk appears to be operable and with only 2 visits and a 15 minute wait so I’m happy. The service writer was also very personable and attentive to my needs. She said that the recommended service on a turbo Genesis is 6000 miles. Unsure if that is true all I can find is 7500 miles.
