  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So my G70 sunroof exploded on the highway today. #&@!

Understand completely why most folks like sunroof. Panoramic ones are getting more and more popular for a reason.

For me, where I live, in about a month or so, I'll be running A/C full time, so definitely no open windows. That lasts all the way till at least late Sept, some times beyond that. The 1-2 months before and after these hot/humid Summer months is allergy season, so absolutely no open windows, either. That basically leaves Nov-Feb for any possibility of open-top motoring.

Still, regardless of the weather, I keep my windows close anyway to minimize wind noise and turbulence. This might sound odd coming from a guy that motorcycle commutes every chance I get. However, I don't ride because I like the wind. Screw that! I'm ATGATT and wear earplugs every time I ride. If there is a way to ride and be completely isolated from the elements, I'd jump on that in a heart beat. There isn't... so I put up with it, cus I do love 2-wheel dynamics. But... when I do get in my car, I want all the comfort, quietness and car audio I can get.

My insurance company (State Farm) has a company called Sunroof Express working with me. They are recommending some local Auto Glass places that claim they replace just the glass, supposedly without removing it and replacing the entire sunroof assembly. That sounds nice (and much cheaper for the insurance company of course), but I'm skeptical.
Has anyone had experience with Sunroof Express? Does anyone know if you can in fact replace just the glass without total disassembly? (I think there used to be a Hyundai parts guy on this forum?)
I've got the Hyundai service manager looking into it and checking the drawings to see if this sounds reasonable.
If this works I can probably get it repaired a lot sooner, although I may not end up with factory glass. At this point, I feel like that might not be a bad thing.
Comments welcome.

Headliner and pillar panels would have to come out but looks possible. Ive attached the guide.

Thank you so much! This is encouraging.

I should have done more Googling. This makes it look downright easy, although I'm not sure my roof will open with all the broken glass pieces in the tracks 🫤

I also found members on this forum from 2016 complaining of their Genesis Sunroof exploding.

I've not had to replace sunroof glass (knock on wood), but I've had windshield replaced several times over the years. I don't think I've ever had one done with actual OEM glass. The latest one was our G70 just this past January. This company installed our replacement windshield using an aftermarket glass made by Pilkington Glass, which is a UK company that is one of the largest replacement glass mfrs. They also make OEM auto glass. I've spoken to several folks in the auto biz and they all say the only time they would recommend going with genuine OEM glass is if your car has HUD that reflects off the windshield. If so, you might also have a better case to persuade your insurance company to approve the claim using OEM glass. It's unfortunately quite common for aftermarket glass not to have to correct curvature to display HUD image correctly.

Since this is a sunroof, there is no ADAS calibration necessary. So not much to worry about.

I still think it's chicken poop that Genesis didn't own up to this one. Yours is far from the first exploding G70/Stinger sunroof I've read about online. And I can just about guarantee it won't be the last.

Thats great they didnt even have to remove any headliners / pillars! Looks like a straight forward swap, almost DIY level

That's what I was thinking. If I didn't have insurance coverage, I would definitely do this myself, assuming I could get the glass.

@Husky I hate that this happened to you! I had something similar happen with the rear power window on a 2015 F150. It exploded while driving down the road on a mild 60 degree day. I hope everything works itself out in short order.

With mfrs trying whatever they can to reduce weight, I'm afraid incidents like these are just gonna happen more and more often. Glass is heavy, and there is a whole lot of it in a typical car. Reducing the glass thickness by just a little bit doesn't cost all that much, if any at all, but might save as much as changing several steel parts to aluminum, each one of which costs $$. Technically, very slightly thinner glass might still be strong enough, since statistically, spontaneous failures might go up, say, 0.02%. For the mfr and their bean counters, that might be acceptable risk. However, if you happen to be that 0.02%, I doubt you'd agree.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
It would be interesting to know what the actual failure rate is for Hyundai and Genesis (although I'm sure it's a pretty small number).

Unfortunately the lack of parts/stock may speak towards the failure rate stats, although post-covid supplier constraints likely taking their toll as well.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Too many failures??

Good advice. I've thought about it. Any brand or model recommendations? There are so many out there..
Here is some more useful info as well:

Man, that's an 8-bolt job, and absolutely DIY easy for most of us. And Genesis is calling to replace the entire freaking moon-roof, with the massive job it entails? That's crazy. And since it only has to slide back what seems like an inch or so, I don't think any glass on the rails should be an issue IMO. But if it is, I'd just finish breaking the entire glass little by little once the replacement is on hand, and clean everything inside, before removal. And I don't even think relearning was necessary at all, as you don't have to disconnect anything. And what I'd do is pay attention more or less how the glass was adjusted, to try to put it back the same way. Although you could always adjust it a little bit by loosening those bolts if needed. I'd honestly suggest to my insurance I want to do the job myself, and they'd save a lot of money in labor. Doubt they'd go with that, but I'd ask anyway. I saved that video, in case I ever need to prove to somebody you don't have to remove the entire darn thing at all.

OMG that dude is annoyingly unwatchable and most of the material is useless dribble that doesn't pertain to qualities I've come to appreciate as important for what a dashcam needs to do, as well as the conditions it must toil under.

It was tough to watch but after making it through the first 5 minutes I was too invested to shut it off😂. There was some useful information....just hard to watch.

My local Hyundai/Genesis dealer, and their chosen collision repair shop, seem unaware that it's possible to replace just the broken sunroof glass, very easily, without removing the entire assembly. They really don't know these vehicles, or how to fix them 😒
I sent the service manager a link to the repair video, and the Genesis part number for the glass. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? Unbelievable.
Also, the Genesis case manager isn't responding to my request for help in finding the necessary parts, or at least providing a lead-time. 🙄 Useless.
