  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So what's the surround setting doing?

To BtHbC: Ahh...no wonder. I've only played DVD-A disks. I've yet to try a movie. Thanks.

My understanding is that the Surround ON setting enables the logic 7 processessing for non-7.1 source materials. The reason that it is likely to enhance CD's, XM, non-7.1 dvd's is because the logic 7 processing is working its magic. If you have a source that is already in a 7.1 format, the additional processing may actually degrade the sound. Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

That answer (The quote above) is correct. The pleasantness of the resulting sound in various situations is in the ear of the beholder. But that is what is going on.

Zed, what I've found it's important to set the audio on the DVD itself too. Sorry if you already know this, but maybe others don't :
You're often given a choice in the audio menu of Stereo, Dolby 5.1, and DTS 5.1. On some DVDs (Pink Floyd's Pulse for example) even the difference between Dolby and DTS is amazing (with DTS 5.1 superior). Of course now I have to go back and try it with Surround checked and unchecked too! So much music, so little time...
And for everyone else, I strongly encourage you to at least try DVD-Audio. Amazon lists about 1400 titles, new and used so it's likely you'll find something you know, love, and will be blown away by on the Lex.

I, too, have been wondering the correct situation for the surround button. Seems to vary by format to me.
All that said, I have just purchased my first two DVD-A. Orbison's Black & White Night, and David Live(Bowie). Can't wait to listen to what the excitement is about. Thanks to all.

You'll LOVE the Orbison DVD-A!
One more tip: I think the surround sounds best with the Fader 3 "clicks" toward the Rears. As always, to each his own!

Am I right to assume the audio on any 5.1 concert DVD will act in the same manner as the audio quality of DVD-A?

It really depends on the concert and original source/mix. The audio quality may be the same, but the surround experience may consist only of audience applause. You mentioned the Orbison DVD-A. You'll hear the difference immediately, from "Leroy. Bring up the lights."

The differences are also noticeable DVD-A to DVD-A. Some multichannel mixes are more aggressive than others. It's not your player that causes that.

My first two DVD-A purchases (Orbison and David Live) are phenomenal. I'm waiting on Elton's GYBR. Do you have a short list of your favs on DVD-A that I can direct some disposable income to? Thanks. How about Queen's Night at the Opera? I'm thinking of buying it in my will be 5th format. LOL.

GBYBR is great too. Here's the latest polling from QQ for other titles:

Almost forgot: Steely Dan's "Gaucho" would be next (since you asked).
