If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

After a long/multi-vehicle search, I've settled on the purchase of the G90. One last concern I'd like to resolve is about engine oil consumption. Is there an excessive oil consumption issue with the G90's 2018 V8 engine? So far, all that I've been able to see is that this was an issue with 2012 and prior V8s. I am new to the Genesis/Hyundai brand (current Lexus, Subaru and Honda owner).

It was only on the early 2012 engines during the first year of the 5.0 GDI engine , and was fixed with a manufacturing change.

Some of the 2009 4.6 V8's had problems, but not related to the excess oil consumption.

I haven't reached my first oil change yet, But can't see where oil level has changed at all on my 2018 Genesis G90 5.0.
Had the 2015 KIA K900 with 5.0 engine , did 55,000 miles and never had to add oil between oil changes.

As others have said, oil consumption was only with some 2012 5.0 engines. I had a 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and now a 2017 G90
all with the V8. My 2012 did consume some oil, but not bad like others. The 2011 was the 4.6 V8 and no problems there.

As said, the problem was short lived (part of the first production year of the 5.0 in 2012). The problem was identified as being the piston rings which were the same manufacturer used by BMW but were not the proper rings for the 5.0. Once Hyundai realized this, they of course changed their production lines to include the proper rings and the problem was solved.

This is my second Genesis with the 5.0 and its been a great engine. Very smooth and power on demand without hyper sounding high rev down shifts to accelerate. Also, can't say enough good about the V8-AWD combination. My last 5.0 was RWD and it was always slipping on wet roads particularly when turning from a stopped position at a corner, kicking in the traction control. No more such nonsense with the AWD - it just goes!

Did your G90 start consuming excessive oil!? I have a G90 w/77K mi & it is doing that now.....

How bad is it now? We're considering a 2020-2022 G90.
Adding about 1qt a month. Had it serviced & suggested to them i may have a problem with PCV valve, but they said no computer code to suggest that. Sooooo- back to dumping oil in it once a week.

Could it be a leak? Valve covers, oil filter housing adapter o-rings, rear/front main seal?

I would be looking for a leak, too. Unless you've been wracking that engine a lot over the time you've owned it - this engine is not at all prone to burning or head gasket leak & cross-contamination. Watch or sample your exhaust for oil burn, check your coolant, or get your 90 in the air and pull down some plastic panels to look for oil-soaked areas.

I dont drive hard, always taken care of it & i keep engine bay clean. Just had it serviced at dealer & nothing was found. Trust me- if there was a chance they could make some $$ finding one of those issues- they would've been all over it. Never been an issue until about 75K miles....
