  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

From a story in the NY Times today about the newest coast to coast record "Cannonball Run". With so little traffic and reduced police presence it appears that now others may take the chance. Also there was this about the temptation across the country to see what will happen:

"In Portland, Ore., the typical number of people caught driving more than 30 miles per hour over the limit has gone from single digits in February to around 30 these days. One car was flagged going 139 miles per hour."

Haha. Wasn't me, promise! If it was, my car would be impounded. Traffic laws are pretty aggressive here.

I always avoid speeding. When I was 20 I had my license suspended for multiple speeding tickets, and the one that finally put me over the edge was going 120mph in a 65mph zone. Learned a hard lesson back then.

True that. Lots of fun to be had between 0 and the speed limit with a much lower risk of self harm or harm to others

I’m not perfect though, and the G70 makes it easy to feed into temptation :p Let’s hope the person caught at 139 was at least not racing through traffic and was alone on a deserted road

The story is that a few teams have tried this Cannonball Run in the past weeks since the major problems to a high speed run are traffic and enforcement. With traffic down to levels unknown in lifetimes and thus enforcement elsewhere this was the chance. A four man team in an Audi R8 L with the trunk filled with fuel tank additions. Four stops, four people, at least two driving and two working the electronic equipment, possibly including stoplight control devices used by emergency vehicles. Perhaps scout vehicles. Manhattan to Redondo Beach California in 26 hours 48 minutes. About 110 mph. They appear to have the receipts and notified the person who keeps track of such things of their intention and updated with photos and other evidence such that he is convinced. No one wants to break cover as this seems is a bad time for such foolery.

Yes. People are speeding everywhere.

I had to go into my office after hours to check on a server that had failed. The drive is 14 miles. I was doing 90 and being passed by people and they were flashing me and honking at me and I was in the #3 lane not the left lane.

I saw Ed Bolian's video about this on the VinWIki channel. He thinks (and I agree), that this completely unusual confluence of circumstances will result in these records basically having an asterisk next to them, because they don't accurately reflect the usual challenge due to substantially reduced traffic and police presence.

Still, an insane time.

I’ve been a long distance driver for years.

1. Having four guys sharing the driving cross country does NOT impress me. Driving long distance alone impresses me more.

2. How about CC50, orCCC100.
Jacksonville (Atlantic Beach) to
San Diego in 50 Hours, and back again to starting point in 100 hours.
Alone. No co-drivers. That impresses me.

3. I’ve done Kerrville TX to Orlando 1250 miles in 19 hours, 30 minutes.

4. One of my best was Hypoluxo FL to Rochester NY (I think 1400 miles) in 23 hours, 50 minutes). This was the days of the 55 mph speed limit plus much of I-95 was not yet completed.

5. Now that I think of it, 15 years ago, I left my primary location of
Mt. Dora FL at 9am EDT and arrived in my third location of Roswell NM, 1650 miles away at 2pm MDT which is 4pm EDT, 29 hours after I started. Even took a couple short cat naps.

My method of long distance driving is (1) Stick to a speed where you are passing as many cars that are passing you. (2) Try not to exceed speed limit by more than 10 mph. Preferably 5 mph over.
(3). Limit your stops. Eat, get fuel and make pit stop all in the same stop. I’ve also found that the less traffic, the more chance you have getting stopped for speeding. (More noticeable with fewer cars on road).
With “normal” traffic, you are not as noticeable.

Is there an equivalent Canadian cross country drive for lowest time? Halifax to Vancouver, likely?

Or Toronto to Montreal high speed night run? Or around Montreal island? I would love to see any of those. I know that there is a speed record around Manhattan island.

A Parsec is a unit of distance, not speed. Don’t remember exactly, but something like three Light Years in one Parsec. (I could be wrong).

I had the same issue. I thought that if I paid the fine, everyone was happy. One day a letter came in the mail saying I was a "habitual violator" with 14 violations in an 18 month period. Lost license for 2 years and had to pay a $2500 fine. That was 40 years ago! Loved that V8 Firebird...
