  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Spare 13.5 sd card update

Yeah, if there is a registration that occurs through BlueLink once the install is complete then that would prevent sharing SD cards. We shall see.

SD cards are custom serialized to the software they’re carrying. You can’t just copy it to another card. Get with Zape if you’re interested, he’s got the process down.

Ok, I will be making a disk image of my update card to make the copy. I will let you know the results.

I hate to jump in on the bandwagon as well but I’d be definitely interested in purchasing a copy myself if it’s able to be done. After whomever has requested before me. Thanks and I’ll keep fingers crossed we’re able to get this working

UPDATE:. Ok, I made a disk image of the new 13.5 SD card. That takes 90 minutes?! Wow! Then wrote the image to a new Sandisk 32gb card. Put the copy SD card in and it recognized it and rebooted. Upon reboot, Immediately navigation did not work says navigation could not be authenticated. So I then tried the update option and it updated. Upon completion it rebooted and navigation still didn't work for same reason as before. I put the Master update SD card in and everything works fine. So their is something going on the first time you run the update with the system and the update card. Looks like a no go right now.

Yep, just as suspected. I wasn't getting my hopes up as this makes perfect sense. But thanks for trying, Cy.

Yeah, it's not going to work. After purchasing an upgrade a few years ago, I tried to backup the new SD card to the old one in case the new one fails. No method worked for me, not even a raw image copy. It's called Secure Digital for a reason, nobody's been able to crack it. I settled on knowing that it's not writing to the card so it'll probably last forever.

Would this work with a 2015 Ultimate model which updates from the USB drive and not the SD card?

You still need the SD card. The USB update isn't copy protected but your old SD card with the old maps won't work. You'll be able to install the update but I don't think you can use the system without the SD card.

Is there an association to the VIN number from the MapNSoft factory, or is the association created the first time the card is inserted into the nav system for updating?

It's been said that for the 2015's it requires the VIN, but as some recently purchased the 2016 and said no VIN was required to purchase, I'd assume it has to do with installation; once installed I believe it locks to that system somehow.

I don't think so, I was never asked for a VIN when I purchased it for my 2015 5.0 Ultimate AWD. The software update is probably looking for a specific encryption key on the SD card. I think the key is the same on all the cards for the same version but I could be wrong. I have a feeling the SD card will work on other cars with the same software version. Older cards will have an old key so the software rejects it.

You have to have a special SD card with rewritable serial number. They’re rare and hard to find, made as MicroSD by Samsung. Then you copy the serial from the original card to the Samsung card using a Linux utility.

Ahh, that makes sense. I watched Zapes video and he was using a Samsung micro SD card. I imagine an EVO model.

So basically if you get a card that has yet to be installed in a car, you should be able to replicate it as much as you want.

No, the software has a key based on the serial number of the the SD card which, for the most part, cannot be modified.
