  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Have been doing a fair amount of highway driving with my new V8 and she loves to cruise at high speeds effortlessly. Used to have an old visor mounted Escort radar detector for my 2002 BMW. Haven't had one for years, but thinking it might be a good investment. I do know that 25 yrs ago Escort was the company of choice. Any thoughts on reliable models for both grill mounted and above dash mounts?

I have an Escort Passport 8500 x50 that I have had for 3 years. It works great! Saved me lots of times. I have hardwired mine so no wires to dangle around. I think this radar can be had for around 300 dollars. I think they now have one that uses a GPS to know when to adjust the sensitivity. (I think when you are in a city, it scales back the sensitivity.)

I have the Escort 9500ix and love it. Mine is also hardwired. There is a company in Cali. that makes a nice Escort mount so you can attach it directly to the rear view mirror. I'll see if I can round up a pic for you.

Here ya' go:

Nabber, that is a great mounting position. What type of mount are you using?

I really like the way you have it mounted vs. how I have mine on my lower windshield, but every manuel I've read about RD's and internet research still states to place the unit on the lowest point on the windshied, just above the wipers for best performance. Not saying that your's won't perform, but could it perform better at a lower placement point?

well...I could write for days on this issue (where to mount the radar detector).

To keep it quick and simple...

LASER--if you live and drive in an area where the officers use mostly lasers to track your speed...you want it as low as you can get it without it being blocked by wipers...ect. Normally, the officer will shoot the laser at your front tag/grill/bumper. Laser speed detection is instantaneous. You will be ticketed before you even have time to hit your brakes!

KA, K, and X band use the waveguide inside the detector. Think of the waveguide as a funnel. You can pour a ton of oil in it and not worry about it splattering all over the place...similarly, you can pour a massive KA band out and the funnel (waveguide) will catch it...practically regardless of where you mount it in the front you will be alerted in great time with a quality product.

I have the Beltronics Pro RX65, simply amazing! 5 years old and refurbed on ebay and still works incredibly well!

On I-65 in Alabama, practically flat terrain, I can smell the heat from 3 miles away on a clear day!

Kicking up an old one here.....

Where did the hardwire tie into? Somewhere up in the rearview mirror?

Also, how did you get it to stay up there?

Another Bump.

I also need to know where I can hardwire my radar detector in the Genesis.

I finally hardwired my radar by tapping onto the Rear View Mirror wires. I found that the pink wire will only supply +12V when the ignition switch is in ON position. The black wire provides the ground.

What kind of Radar Dectector did you get/have?

And did you use an "add a circuit" down to the fuse box?

Since here in Houston Police only uses K band, I installed the cheapest Cobra I could get. I bought this one 6 years ago, I had it hardwired on the bimmer that I recently sold.

No need for extra fuse since the +12V already come from the fuse box.

I'm about to mount my new Passport to my mirror and I bought a wiring harness that ties into the mirror. I was just about to post a question on the forum about which wire to tie into when I found your post, TimeOut. Many thanks; you saved me a lot of time, I hope.

If the wiring colors have remained the same the last few years I'll be in business!

Wow! A really old thread brought back to life.

I have a 5 year old Beltronics with front/rear capability that is so sensitive I can put it inside the console next to my iPod and it catches signals way before I see anything. In fact, that's were it is all the time. Can you tell I'm pretty ambivalent about this technology?

My more effective speed management assistance is often riding in the seat next to me!

:eek::eek:

My car has pretty effective speed management assistance. When my speed starts to drift above 65 a voice from the passenger seat says, without fail, "do you realize how fast you're going?"

I picked up the Escort Max in place of my 9500ix and so far it's better all around. Had them both mounted for a few days and the Max is picking things up sooner, about 3-5 seconds quicker and sometimes more. It also isn't false alerting anywhere near as much as my 9500ix did, I've got mine mounted below the mirror a little more than halfway down. They are running a special that lets you get the smart cord direct wire kit for either Android or Apple for $39 (normally $99) and an additional suction cup at no charge.

I have pretty much given up on excessive speeding (except a short burst in well thought out locations). I just set the CC for 6 mph over the limit and enjoy the drive.
