  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Spots on the trim of the R-Specs

I guess that I am still wondering if a good tinter can account for the existing factory tint to ensure I get the result that I am after. For the most part I like my tinting so will probably not get the windows re-done.

Cheers,
Newman
The only way it can be accounted for is for the customer to choose two different VLT's from the same product and specify them for different windows and hope the end result matches. For example, maybe a 40 VLT on the rears and a 30 VLT on the front sides to compensate that the rears are darker to start with. But not all tints come in closely spaced VLT ranges, and it is doubtful that they end up looking exactly the same if the factory glass had different tints for different windows. I would just accept that the R-Spec comes with darker glass on the rear by design. I guess it is part of the R-Spec "shtick" (which I am not into personally).

It sounds like you were discussing this with the dealer. Dealers don't do tinting, they farm it out to tint shops, so you would have been better off dealing directly with a tint shop and talking to the installer directly.

Mark - Absolutely agree - I was thinking that the tinter would need to use this pretty simply logic that you laid out to 'match' the final VLT's. I cannot imagine that I am the first person looking for this end result.

I was aware that the dealer farms out the tinting job. However, I hold the dealer responsible for managing the end result that we agree to in the deal. After all, the dealer farms out many aspects of his business (from tax returns to toilet paper stocking). That said, I think you are correct that I should not have trusted the dealer to manage something of this complexity (?!?) that I cared about on my behalf. In fact, anything above the complexity of cashing a check seems above most dealers.

Cheers,
Newman

California has very strict laws on drivers and front passenger windows. I believe that the maximum tint is 70% VLT for the the front side windows (but darker is allowed on rear sides and rear facing glass). Not many people even bother tinting the driver and front passenger windows in CA for that reason.

Picked up my R-spec last Saturday (titanium gray metallic). No issues with the trim.
