If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Sprung headrest

Hello Everyone,

This information has been extremely helpful.

Genekey, I too found these small black plastic pieces on the floor after my wife was recently hit in a minor, rear end accident. I saw that the seats deployed although I had no idea they would and didn't even see this feature listed when I googled 2009 Hyundai Genesis safety features.

Now that I know what I do (in reference to cost), I am going to be sure my insurance company knows to include repair/replacement of the headrests as part of the claim.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
So hold on - let me get this straight...

There's a TSB showing how to reset a headrest when it goes off, meaning it's a re-usable part. The headrests on a few of your Genesises(Genesi?) went off, and subsequently broke all over the inside of your car. Now you're going to come out of pocket to replace this crap? This trend of letting dealers push you around is sickening. If there is a TSB on how to reset it, then it's a reusable part. If it's reusable, then if it breaks it's defective and should be covered under the warranty. Stop letting them con you into paying for things you shouldn't have to, and bring this to their attention.

Just because a company tells you something isn't covered under warranty doesn't mean it isn't. It's one thing if an airbag isn't covered, since it's not exactly re-usable. It's another entirely to have a TSB on how to reset the part and then charge people to repair it when after functioning, it breaks.

hi, i just rear ended a genesis yesterday pretty hard, but there were no damage. the owner calls me today and said that the headrest were deployed and that it's a very expensive fix. i saw the pdf file that someone posted(thank you), but i was wondering where i can buy a cheap oem part if it actually broke. thank you, also this is my first time on a forum so please excuse me if i didnt do things correctly. thanks again

I'm still waiting for my dealer to call back, but does anybody have any experience with the active head restraints? Unfortunately I got rear-ended pretty hard two days ago. Both front headrests "deployed". They sprang forward and upward (They worked -- I got zero whiplash). The body shop (not Hyundai dealer) says they don't touch those of course.

Can they be reset, or do they have to be replaced? The service rep at the dealer doesn't know, and is looking into it. Just wondered if anyone has knowledge on these gizmos.

My 2011 was rear ended yesterday and the head rest deployed. I spoke with a body shop (not Hyundai dealer) and he told me they should be able to be reset. But if they do not reset will need to replace the entire head rests. My head rests will not reset and will have to be replaced. The Hyundai certified body shop was not familiar with these head rests. I hope this will help.

I ran over a log that the pickup truck in front of me cleared. It didn't hit either the front or rear bumper, but made lot's of noise, as it went underneath. Both headrests popped. Much thanks to Dimitry for the pdf file of the TSB on how to put it back together.
I could NOT get it to latch by just pushing with my hands, so I put it on the carpet and stood on it, after I had everything lined up. I could feel it and hear it click into place.
The first one took over 30 minutes from start of pulling clip and replacing clip. Most of that time trying to push it back in place with my hands. The second one less than 5 minutes, as I just lined it up and stood on it.
The repair people might not have used as much force as is required.
Thanks again for the info.

Today my husband slammed down too hard on the center console and the headrests sprung! Needless to say we were both quite shocked. Dimitry's post saved us a lot of money. My husband was able to quickly restore the headrests within 5 minutes. Thank you!

Hey, I ran across this thread on google & thought you guys might be interested in what I did yesterday. Two of the pics show the inner workings of your stock headrests. In the center of the assembly, you can see the electrical solenoid which actuated the headrest. The other two show why I took them apart in the first place. I removed the servos & hid them inside the seats so that the car wouldn't have any trouble codes when I installed the new headrests. We had Rosen custom build the kit that's in this car. I wouldn't think this will ever be available to the general public, but I'm pretty proud of this one. Everything works perfectly & the factory electrical system is 100% intact.

Hi, similar to all of you I got a small rare accident. Any way, I found this useful pdf from Dimitry (big thanks). I felt everything was working by the book but I never succeeded in getting the final click ?

Any trick I should know to get the final click ?

I feel I am close but cannot finish the job

Remove from the car. Put the headrest face up on a bench or table. Press down really hard with steady pressure(make sure the retainers are free and loose on inside of the headrest) using your fore arm until you hear a slight click.

I have taken it to the agency and they quickly fixed it. No charges !!

I have the same issue and didn't see this one answered. Does anyone know how to reset the latch inside the headrest? I also reset that latch accidentally before coming across this thread and Dimitry's PDF, so now I can't get the headrest to latch at the end of the process . Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the information on reset.
I believe that I inadvertently reset the latch and would like to know if there is any way of releasing it . The action of pushing the headrest back into placed worked however I assume I failed to push sufficiently to engage the latch.
Any help would be appreciated

Easy, take a 9v battery (used in smoke detectors), attach a wire to each pos. and neg. ends, touch the end of the wire to the terminals located at the end of the post (if you look inside black tipped side, you will see the connector terminals that the sensors attach from the headrest to the back of the seat). You may need to push it back with you finger while connecting the battery in case it sticks. Also, this may not be the problem, i actually hade to keep it closed and flip the headrest iver and force the middle of the headrest down to the backside by putting the plastic side down on the floor and pressing down with my knee into the center of the headrest using my body weight- tricky because i had to first press it together and then carefully flip it over while keeping pressure on it to keep it cimpressed. It all wokred for me finally.

Best of luck.

I too had a minor, no damage rear ending where the headrests deployed. I was able to restore them following the instructions kindly posted here. One thought though, is there anything in the system that would confirm that they are ready to be deployed again, i.e. through the computer monitoring? I am asking because I note the reference of some to broken parts. Would it reset if there were broken parts?

Hi, does someone have a clear picture where these locking springs are? I have a 2010 Genesis sedan with the same sprung headrest after a minor rear collision.

Never mind. Didn't realize it was those metal rods. I managed to snap the headrest in place by compressing it first in my hands then putting it on the floor and kneeling on it to snap it in place.

The little black tabs also broke off inside my headrest when it deployed in my '09 sedan. This appears to be a manufacturing defect. Regardless, I was able to reset to headrest as described in the tech bulletin even without the tabs. I found that the instructions did not clearly illustrate how much pressure was required to perform the reset. The back and forth rocking helps, but if all else fails, use elbow grease.

Thanks Dimitry! Saved me a trip to the dealership.

Thanks man. Your post was really helpfull. You are awesome!

Thanks. it worked. and saved lots of time and worry, after a minor tap on the bumper, with no damage except the deployed headrests.
