Starter balk

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered, I didnt find it through search...

I have a '12 4.6 with 22k miles. It has recently developed an issue...when pushing the start button, the starter seems to try to turn over for about 1/2 second, then gives up. But, a second attempt has (so far) always been successful. This seems to happen only when cold, and happens maybe every 5th time.

Anyone know if this is a common issue, or am I just 'lucky?'

Have you had your battery amperage checked at an auto parts store? Cold weather reduces the amp output significantly. Your battery could be dying or you could have a drain on it while it's off. Maybe the 1/2 second crank allows the alternator to put just enough juice back into it to allow it to start.

Bingo. Definitely sounds like a battery on its way out.
Try turning off everything (radio, headlights) anything that puts a load on the battery and see if you get better results.
If you have a volt meter check cold, starting and running voltage.

Starter would be covered 100%, but I'm not sure how long a battery is covered.

Two years for full warranty.

Battery: 3 years/unlimited miles (100% covered 2 years/unlimited miles; after 2 years and within 3 years, 25% cost of battery and 100% labor cost covered)

The battery may be bad, but a 1/2 second of cranking sure wouldn't allow the alternator to do anything to change that.

First check the several connectors between the battery and the starter-------they may be loose or corroded. The fact that, after the first attempt, the battery starts the car sure could be poor connections.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Not getting enough juice to the starter is a good idea...I should have thought of that!

I guess if you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail...so am I with a warranty, and every problem looking like a claim.

Ill check into the battery and interconnects. Thanks again for the advice.
