  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

4 weeks ago I bought/stole a USED Pearl White exterior/Saddle interior 2013 3.8L Genesis sedan with premium package (no tech package) with only 400 miles from a new mercedes dealer in Clearwater FL. The mercedes dealer was asking 33K and I ended up buying it for $28,000 plus tax and tag/title on the last day of september.

The first owner or the original Hyundai dealer in New Port Richey had done about 1-2 grand in upgrades including an extravagant pin stripe in real paint (not tape), high quality window tint, some exterior accessories et al. The original owner had only had the car 3 weeks when they traded it in on a new mercedes. The service date on the car was mid september of 2013. Clean carfax history and title. The damn wheel wells weren't even dirty yet!

I'd been watching for a 2012 or 2013 3.8L sedan with premium and Tech packages within 12 hours of orlando. All I was finding were cars in colors I specifically didn't want with more miles than I wanted and further away than I wanted. Additionally, everything I was finding despite being a new listing was invariably sold by the time I called. The only exceptions were a few that the dealer was trying to get new car pricing on the vehicles ($40K plus).

I was watching a variety of used car sites daily for about 5 weeks when this almost new pearl white Genesis with premium package only showed up at a New mercedes dealer in Clearwater FL. It had 400 miles on it. I called within a day or two of the dealer placing the ad. They told me it was considered sold already to a salesmans friend's wife. At the time of my call they said the salesman was showing it to his friends wife over brunch in Sarasota. On a whim I called back 3 hours later to confirm that the car was sold and found out it came back from brunch unsold and was still available. They agreed to hold it for 3 hours for me to take the 120 mile drive to their dealership in clearwater.

When I arrived at the dealer there seemed to be a lot of commotion over my arrival; a lot of angry salesman who were apparently hoping to sell it to one of their clients. My salesman told me at any given time in a used car dept like that at the mercedes dealer there is always a hot car that everyone is calling about for a week. He said that week it was that Genesis and that everyone knew it would go quickly, just a matter of who got the sale. Additionally it was the last day of september (monday the 30th). Obviously the dealer got it at a low trade in price from it's first owner.

I've had the car for less than a month now and have 1100 miles on it. Had it inspected by my frame shop mechanic and no signs of any issues or funny stuff. Just a clean relatively new car.

I think was in the right place at the right time and negotiated an great deal.

Like you said, right place, right time ......congrats!!

It's strange to me that someone would trade a brand new car in after only 400 miles. I'd be wary of something dishonest going on.

Then again, there are some people who have more money than brains.

Just bought a Preferred Package equipped 3.8 with iPod cable, Mud Guards, and Sunroof Deflector

Edmunds says

MRSP $40,120
True Market Value $37,770
Invoice $37,512

I'm paying $35221 before the $3000 in rebates and my trade-in.

Seems like a great deal.

You mean Premium Package?

Pretty common nowadays to see extremely low mileage cars as some member on here suggested people with more cash than brain.
And also corporate/executive loaner cars being returned as newer year model being delivered to them.
Most of these cars can be had for relatively much cheaper than their brand spanking new counterparts sitting next to them in the dealer parking lot assuming you do your spreadsheet right prior making a trip to its respective dealership.
When shopping for a new car earlier this month. I came across a 13 Equus with only 600 miles asking $48k. Several others 2012-13 r-spec models asking on the range of $35-38k with 6k miles or less on it. But here is the deal, I almost pulled trigger on one of these until I found out I could get a new one for only $4-5k more. Key word: Year end 2013 Genesis models are being offered with some incredible rebates/incentives in courtesy of HMA.

Is the 10 year/100,000 mile applicable in this case ?

You mean Premium Package?

I picked up a new blue 3.8 with Premium Package for 32,600 out the door in August after a $1k net trade in...sticker was just over 40k. I couldn't find another car I liked as much within several thousand dollars.

It definitely not a certified Hyundai used vehicle. So I do get the bulk of the 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty but I don't get the extended powertrain warranty. The car was in service for 18 days when I purchased it. I understand the sentiment above about concern over something dishonest going on but this is Florida; land of rich elderly people who don't mind apparently taking a $10,000 depreciation hit on a new car just because it doesn't have a mercedes or BMW nameplate. PTL!

Back in 2009 there were some people on this forum (at least two that I know about) who hated the suspension and trading their car in after very short time. But the suspension has definitely improved since then. However, it still is fairly firm compared to some other cars in its class.

So true about the "firm" ride. But Hyudai finally changed it in 2012 (or 2013)one or the other.

I love our 09, but the car becomes unsettled over bumps SO easily. I dont knew that its overly firm, but its very disappointing

Hyundai made suspension changes to the Genesis sedan as follows:
  • Mid-year 2009 - minor change
  • 2010 - changed spring rates, shocks, struts and stabilizer bar
  • 2012 - further changes to spring rates, shocks, struts and stabilizer bar

Probably bouncy is more accurate than overly firm. Root cause is that springs are too tight and overpower the shocks/struts.

You can make improvements by swapping out springs, shocks, and rear stabilizer bar to the ones used for newer model year (as I did to my early 2009). But probably the most cost effective change is to replace the rear stabilizer bar with the one used on 2012+ models. The part is about $125 plus labor.

In SoCal there are quite a few Genny sedans on the dealer lots that were licensed by Hyundai USA as fleet cars and given to Hyundai execs and regional managers as company cars. When the new models come out, the older cars are swapped out and sent through the CPO program. When I got mine, I noticed that the Nav system was programmed with the locations of every Hyundai dealership from Santa Barbara to San Diego so I imagine the previous driver was a regional service or sales manager. He/She was also a major baseball fan since the XM radio presets were all MLB channels.

If there was anything that would make me consider trading in my Genny for a Mercedes, and I didn't care about the money, it would be the seats. You sit on the Genny's seats. An E-Class MB's seat cradles you like you wish your momma had. Might be the sort of thing that would make someone trade their's in after a couple hundred miles, if you realized after you bought it that you just couldn't get comfortable in the seat.
