  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Earlier this year in a previous post my steering was sticking when its cold and I'm going highway speeds. The dealership replaced the pump and all was well until this winter. Same problem cropped up and this time the power steering fluid in the reservoir drops in the cold. Now they are saying its a leak in my power steering system somewhere. Either way they are replacing the pump again, the hose, and the power steering harness which evidently got destroyed by power steering fluid. Just starting this thread in case someone runs into the same problem.

It will cost Hyundai a few bucks if they have to replace the steering rack.
.

Now they are saying that it was leaking at the connection to the pump and they are still waiting on parts. They claimed they ordered the wrong part and the correct part is on back order. I reached out to Hyundai about this because this is the 2nd pump to fail on a car with 42000 miles.

Well got the car back Friday. They said it was fixed. Drove it this morning and its far from fixed. They replaced the pump and that fixed the vanishing fluid problem but the car is still hard to turn when its cold and it gets worse the faster you go. Am I the only one experiencing this problem?

I have had a problem with my steering stiffening significantly. But, so long as I have owned it only happens when I am entering a cloverleaf and slowing the car. The car turns but it is insanely tight. As the speed drops to about 40 it breaks loose like the power got switched back on. Then the steering wheel has a bit of a vibration that is visible if I take my hand away for a moment on a straight stretch. It's minor and goes away after a few miles. Otherwise you'd think it was out of balance. I reported it to the dealer after I got it in the spring this year. It's a 2011. They said it was normal for the steering to stiffen at speed, but I don't think they were actually able to replicate the problem either. Interestingly enough, the problem seemed to go away right after that visit on which they also had it for the ecm update. But, it was getting warmer, too. Last week we started having our first cold mornings again and the trouble has returned, at least as long as I'm not slowed to around 40 when I start the turn into that cloverleaf. It's one I use everyday on the way to work.

The are going to replace the rack so we will see what happens. I'm not surprised they can't reproduce the problem. There shouldn't be any stiffness with the power steering. You can try having the tech ride with you.

I have a similar problem. If the car is parked on a slight incline, the steering is very stiff when I first start the car but smooths out when I move the car to level ground. It acts like low fluid but the level is OK. If the car is on a flat surface, this does not happen. So it appears something is affected by the incline but with a full fluid reservoir, I am not sure what it could be.

Did replacing the rack fix the problem?
