  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 5.0 60K miles Just recently noticed there is a very light vibration to the steering wheel that goes away when I turn the AC off. AC compressor pulley maybe? Thoughts? Never used to be this way. At first I thought maybe the electronic power steering was starting to break down until I realized I could make it go away by turning the AC off.

So the AC compressor pulley guess was just that: a guess. without me even looking at anything. I know. Stupid. Anyways just did an oil change and looked at all the pulleys from underneath the car. The only one that seems to be slightly wobbly is the one all the way at the top, right under the intake/ throttle body. I think it’s the water pump? Belt tensioner pulley looked OK idler pulley looked OK AC compressor pulley looked OK alternator pulley looked OK. Thoughts on why the water pump pulley slightly wobbling would have anything to do with the slight steering wheel vibration going away when I turn the AC off? I understand why the AC compressor pulley could cause steering wheel vibration with the AC on but I don’t understand what turning the AC on and off has to do with the water pump pulley if that’s even what’s causing the steering wheel vibration. Like I said I can make the steering wheel vibration go away by turning the AC off🤔🤔🤔🤔 help?

The engine is shaking from the extra load.

It could be perfectly normal or just needs a tune up.

That pulley on the AC compressor turns whether or not the AC is turned on. It's a clutchless system.
Is the vibration more or less when you manually alter the blower speed? Maybe the blower wheel is unbalanced?
Alternately, is the difference just due to different engine RPM due to different loading on the engine if the AC is running or not?
You can switch the car on, but not start it to see if it might be the blower motor and not the engine. You can also try pressing the gas a little to speed the engine up. Maybe it's tune-up or motor mount time?

not normal. I’ve had the vehicle 3 years now. Just started recently.

“It's a clutchless system” so the load created by the ac Compressor alone is constant? Engine RPM remains Constant at 500 RPM whether the AC is on or not. As far as tuneup or motor mounts The engine doesn’t shake nor the car nor my seat or anything it’s literally just a light vibration from the steering wheel that never used to exist. Happens when I’m stationary in park and also when I’m driving and like I said the only thing that makes it come and go is whether the AC is on or off. I will try the blower motor with the engine off and get back to you

No. That's not how it works. The compressor is always turning, but the load it presents varies. If the AC is off, then the control valve is off and the compressor presents no detectable load. When the AC is on, if it is very hot or humid inside, then the compressor presents a high load. If it is fairly cool and dry inside, then the compressor presents only a slight load.
People make the same mistake about the alternator. It is always turning, but the load from the alternator is proportional to the about of power being drawn from it.

My 5.0 does the exact same thing - The AC compressor is probably no where near as balanced as the engine! There are other things going on as well... When the AC is on, the electric fans @ the radiator/condenser kick on also. Those things seem powerful enough to shred a chicken, I'd bet that they contribute quite a bit of vibration,
