Hello everyone. Great site/lots of good info. I have been very impressed with
the Genesis for quite some time. As a current Infinity & previous Lexus owner, I guess i'm kind of spoiled with the buying & service experience these
companies offer. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems Hyundai is not very interested in marketing/selling/servicing this car the way it should be. Since many members are previous owers of Infinty/Lexus, are you sorry you didn't go with the better dealer experience ? Can you overlook this for the sake of a more superior automobile? I am down to the Lexus ES350 OR the 2010Genesis V6. The Gen looks like the better value, but what about after the
purchase ? Also- Can anyone recommend dealers in Southern California for
the Gen. ?

Help me get off the fence!!

I went from an ES300 to the V8 Gen, absolutely no regrets. Remember, one of the expectations out of buying these cars is that you're not trying to be a "regular" in either their showroom or service center. True, my Hyundai dealer doesn't pick up my car at my work and leave a loaner (what the Lexus dealer in town does), they do offer to provide me a ride from the dealer to work, and I'm comfortable with that.

Easily the biggest hurdle I've found with friends who are in the market for a similar vehicle is brand recognition. They would never buy a Hyundai, regardless of features/looks/etc... They want a Lexus because "I own a Lexus" still sounds a lot more impressive than "I own a Hyundai". I drove a friend a few hours in my car over the summer, and we were talking about new cars when he said, "I wouldn't really buy a Hyundai". I asked "don't you like this car, it's a Hyundai?", and he said, laughingly, "oh, I just assumed it was a Lexus". Hyundai has a bit of work to do still.

You have to ask yourself a few questions when thinking about Lexus over the Hyundai. First of all, the ES350 is front wheel drive and built off the Camry platform. It's not a bad thing at all, but lets call a spade a spade.
1. Does brand snobbery mean anything to you? Lexus
2. Value for money. Hyundai
3. Sportiness. Hyundai
4. Are you a mellow driver (Buick,Caddy), who prefers comfort over all other things? Lexus
5. Are you a Connected to the road (BMW, Infiniti) type? Hyundai

Both are good cars, but just remember 1 thing. When god made cars, in his infinite wisdom, he separated the drive wheels from the steering. Only one of the two cars you mention has that set up. And it aint made in Japan.

Well, the Genesis and the Lexus ES are hardly similar cars, it's hard to even compare them. If you're mainly worried about the service experience, I would say buy the Genesis, but put a grand or two aside for your "trips to the dealer". Every time you take your Genesis in, just slip the service manager and/or tech an extra $100 bill. I bet you'll get the Lexus service experience with only a slight premium over the Hyundai price, all while getting a much better vehicle than the Lexus ES.

Just in case some people don't get it, yes, I'm joking...well, sorta joking.

If you want the attention then by all means go for the Genesis and put the wings on the hood, trunk, and wheels. Everybody drives a Lexus and its a great automobile. But everybody will look and stare at your Genesis and try to figure out who makes it. After 9 months of ownership of my Silver Genesis I still get people asking, stopping me, and MOST of all complementing my new Genesis. It doesn't get old and everytime I see somebody staring at my car when I'm on the highway or at a stop light it makes me feel good about my purchase. Go for it you won't regret it!!!!:):D

Well, Genesis vs Lexus GS will be more fair compare. I replaced my three years old GS with Genesis and don't have any regrets so far.

Mechanically you're correct. But they are most similar in the most important denominator, price.
JAMMIN where are you in SoCal?

TJ- I'm in the L.A. Area. Not interested in the attention (Wings) I just want
a reliable car, & would like something with a little more sporty feel than the
Lexus ES.

Check your private messages. I sent you the name of a guy at a dealer in the valley. The good thing here in LA, is that there are so many dealers and so much to choose from. If you have the time, you can get exactly what you want.

ttsig - Your $100 solution is brilliant.

I would never compare an ES to the Genesis. The ES compares to something like, if Hyundai were to glitz up the Azera or something like that. You have to move up to a more substantial/solid, rear wheel drive car to start comparing.

The ES is nice, but it really is just a Camry with a nicer shell, and upgraded interior. It does'nt suck by any means though, but I would seriously probably opt for a loaded v6 Accord.

You guys had to know I'd chime in. :D

I had an 09 Genesis. Very nice car overall. Nice fit and finish. Competitive features and a good value. It just didn't work for me. I didn't like the road noise or the road feel - it just wasn't comfortable for me. I found the dealer (six of them in total) network to be subpar compared to other brands (service and sales ratings also reflect this) and Hyundai is rather unresponsive to customer needs.

Ultimately, I traded for a Lexus LS460. I'm not going to entertain the petty "brand snob" comments purported here. I bought a Hyundai after owning MB, BMW and Lexus. Brand recognition aside, there's a reason Lexus has the highest brand satisfaction and quality every year for over a decade. The attention to detail and the overall customer experience just cannot be beat - literally. But you do pay for it, which personally, I'm fine with.

That said - The ES is an entry level Lexus and the Genesis is the top end Hyundai. The ES is indeed a Camry wrapped up in the Lexus packaging and experience. The ES will offer quite a bit less space than the Genesis. The Genesis will have more features, attract a bit more attention (everyone and their cousin has a Lexus ES or RX around here) and if memory serves, have a slightly better warranty (though honestly, good luck getting it honored properly.)

Bottom line - if you don't mind a very sporty ride, you're looking for a nice car, for a nice value and don't mind the substandard support/service - the Genesis is hard to beat in its class. If you prefer a more comfortable ride, better resale value, you don't mind giving up a few features and paying a premium for better service - the ES is the way to go.

Good luck with your search.

Help me get off the fence!!

I currently own a Genesis V6 Tech and hate the suspension. Other than that its a wonderful car, but the ride is 75% of having a nice car (IMHO). If I had to do over I would not choose the Genesis. I would have spent alot more money and get the Lexus. HEY LLT !! Im really jealous you were able to walk away from it and get into a nice comfy ride !! ;)

IMHO
Seattle Genesis

I went from a Lexus LS 430 (06) to the Genesis 4.6, I prefer the performance of the Genesis, the ride is harsher, the acceleration and brakes better. I was quoted 69K for the lexus equipped like my 06, The price for my 2010, with everything the Lexus had except folding mirrors was 40K with the dscount. 29k with a better warranty, To me thats a no brainer. (that would have been my 6th lexus since 1991.

This is certainly awesome Dev!!

On the issue of service, I bought my 4.6 from the same dealer, he is both Lexus ad Hyundai (different locations), not so fancy but the same courtesy and service so far. With a 7500 mile service incident, that means I will visit the dealer twice a year, a lot of cost for the plush service.

I had two Infinitis and came to Genesis to get a quality car for a good value. I'm generally very happy after 1,900 miles. I called service last evening to schedule first oil change for next Tuesday. Called this morning to change to Wednesday - they didn't have my name. Regarding better treatment than the Hyundai - the service gal never asked what car I had. Infiniti service calls were much more professional and personal. I'll find out next Wednesday, but I don't have high expectations to meet Infiniti's service managers and classy waiting area.

I have experienced a big spread with the dealers in LA. Keyes Hyundai in Van Nuys has been excellent. They have it down pat. Other dealers who shall remain nameless, have been pretty bad. I guess it's part of the luxury of living in the car Mecca. There are about a dozen dealers I could go to, but of course I would be stuck in traffic getting there
