  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Greetings Ladies and Gents,

I looked through the forum, but couldn't find anything related to my question. I have a 3.8 sedan with factory fog lights. I have to say they put out a feeble amount of light. Do other owners find this to be the case? Are there any aftermarket products that actually do a good job of lighting the road?

Thanks!

What did you do with your DH today?

You will be able to find a picture of the fog light output at night with headlight off. In my opinion they produce good amount of light and can enhance your visibility if adjusted properly. As long as the long distance visibility goes, make sure your headlight bulbs are in good condition and aimed properly. I had to raise mine a bit as the dealership always adjusts them too low. I was able to see the cutout line few feet away from me and couldn't see far.

They also don’t last long because they are turn signal lights too. I’ve changed driver side twice and passenger side once. The best fix, leave the lights on all the time or turn DRLs off. I prefer lights on option, they go off automatically after shut off, no need to worry about the battery drain.

Fog lamps aren't designed to help with distance vision; they're designed to project extra light light on road immediately in front of the car when driving very slowly (<25 MPH) in dense fog or other conditions that severely degrade your vision. The extra foreground light from the fog lamps can impair your distance vision if you use them in clear weather at normal speeds.

If you're having trouble with distance vision, I recommend checking your headlight aim. Here's a good article that explains the details, including how to do it yourself (scroll down a bit, it's a long article) and how to find a shop with an optical aiming machine.
