  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

if it didn't happen to me i wouldn't believe it.

So i stop in to see what Lester Glenn Hyundai in Toms River, NJ would give me for my 2010 Yukon denali, just to see if it's worth it to downsize into a car for a while (we all know the reason lol). Much to my surprise they give me $44k for it! i only paid $52xxx for it in February of 2010 so i took it and started negotiating a deal for a 3.8 Tech/Premium (black/tan). i end up getting it for $37k and change plus ttl. Take it home my wife and i love it. fast forward to my debacle.....

later on that night i removed the rear "flying H" from the trunk and find out there's 2 freakin holes in the trunk lid? so.... (dealer ordered me the "wings" for free) i go back to the dealer to try and purchase a new flying H to plug the holes up on my brand new car. of course they don't stock it. so i left in search of a dealer that has one. i get on the garden state parkway and at about 60-65 i feel this odd sensation, like a tire out of balance? so i go back to the dealer and the service department kind of blew me off? are you kidding me? i bought this car less than 24 hours ago and now i'm "old news"? No loaner available, can you make an appointment, etc. etc. so i figure let me find the salesman that helped me out yesterday. of course HE'S OFF!!

i find another salesman and he goes to the service manager and demands the car get the tires checked out. the service manager (a female) then berates the salesman (i'm outside the door and hear it all) so he walks out and i say to him and her, "No PROBLEM, i'll go and get the tires balanced myself and drop you guys the bill." oh, and don't worry, i'll make CERTAIN i fill your survey out" the sales guy chases me out (yes i felt bad afterwards but now i'm boiling) he says i'll get you a loaner, etc. i said NOPE i want the BOSS. i want the BOSS to hear this BS.

Well, he gets the owner/president of ALL the Lester Glenn dealers (office in the newest building which is the one Hyundai's in). so i meet President Adam Kraushaar. I tell him my experience (also told him about the phone tag i played earlier, the reason i had to DRIVE there because i couldn't get anyone on the PHONE to tell me if they had the flying H there in the first place.

Adam gets the service manager and the hyundai rep (was there for another couple cars) to go for a test ride. they confirm there is a vibration in the drivetrain at those speeds, think it's more than a tire issue but they try anyway. roadforce balance, no good, they swap rims/tires (from a demo i drove and confirmed was fine) no good again.

so i'm picking out a new car and realize there are none that are to my liking (color combo/pkgs) only one i found there that i liked was a 4.6 black on black and $2k more.

General Mgr says he would have to clear it with the President and the President said even though they are losing $780 on the deal get it done!!! WOW.......... i can't believe i scored like this. i wasn't looking for the V8 because i thought the fuel economy would be much worse. but after reading about the experiences of some of the owners i realized last night that i could've went with the 4.6 anyway. Now i have one. and man does that powertrain change the whole driving dynamics of the car? i'm glad i didn't test drive the V8 or i wouldn't have gotten that deal because i would've bought the V8 originally.

anyway i have to highly recommend LESTER GLENN HYUNDAI IN TOMS RIVER. aside from the service writer/mgr having a bad day on the same day i was, the sales guys (many came over to me and attended to getting me bottled water, consoling, etc.) are awesome and the deals are great!..

forgot to mention, first time i took it on the parkway was after i left in search of the flying H, otherwise i don't know if i would've picked up on the vibration for weeks, maybe months... wife drives it i have a truck lol who knows how it would've turned out had that much time gone by?

Nice car. i have been thinking about buying one also until i seen the 2012.
good luck and again you have a nice car...

with the new trans i wouldn't touch one for a year, at least. but then again you have the warranty. skeptical about the "in house" development and testing. reminds me of when GM first came out with the 4 speed od trans' lol.. years to get that right. now we're going from proven ZF units to god knows what? i do like the looks better but not enough to deal with an unproven trans in such an expensive car (a few year track record and i'll change my opinion).

For what i can understand you don't have to get the R-spec for the 2012 looks. i more so like the new look of the car..

Your story is one of a good business person going beyond what is expected. Thats the kind of business that stays around for a long long time. We have a couple of dealers in my area that go the extra mile and have been around for serval generations. Others come and go that have reputations of poor customer service.

yes you are correct from what i've read. i would just be uncomfortable with a brand new trans from an automaker that is doing this for the first time, just my $.02 could be a great success but when ZF says it has a new 8 speed i don't think twice. when hyundai says it (chrysler, ford, GM, etc.) i'd wait and see.

yeah, that family has had a dealership for over 40 years. very happy i went to them, doubt i would've had the experience at one of the other hyundai stores in my area, all "corporate" company stores, no "Owners" around you know?

You've got to love trips to the dealership, always makes life interesting. My trip there yesterday didn't yield nearly as fantastic results as yours, but.... I went in simply to have them change the setting so with a simple one push of the drivers door handle button I could unlock all the doors. I talked to one of their service guys and he told me it's not possible. I explained I had read it was and that you just had to go to a Certified Hyundai dealership. So he went and talked to a mechanic and told him nope it's not possible. He asked where I read it from, I told him I couldn't remember for sure, maybe on this forum or some place else but didn't know. He told me don't believe everything you read. So I had to leave to get back to work, after work I read my manual that came with the car and in the manual is where I originally read about getting this change done. Took the manual back to the same guy whom earlier told me it wasn't possible, told him I could probably believe what I see here in the manual. he then spent the next ten minutes with the stupidest look on his face like what do I do now. I told him on my old Nissan Murano I could change the setting myself and get it done in less than a minute, I don't expect this to cost anything (this is before he even had a clue how to change the setting). After another ten minutes I told him I had to get going because I had to be some place and I would just take it to another dealership if they can't figure it out. About another fifteen minutes later the service man and mechanic finally figured out how to make the change and he said, normally we'd charge you if we have to hook up the computer, but since you're in the military (I was wearing my uniform at the time) I'll do you a favor and not charge you. Gee thanks, only took over half an hour. So didn't quite get a nice upgrade to a 4.6, but I least finally can unlock all my doors with just one push of the button at NO charge :S

They are using the name shiftronic, that means this is licensed from ZF. Clearly Hyundai is using enough units that it made more sense to license the mfg of the ZF unit than continue to order directly from ZF.

I am not suggesting that the new unit isn't designed in part by Hyundai, just stating that if they licensed the name Shiftronic from ZF they likely licensed a lot of the design of the unit.

While I certainly have no personal knowledge as to how Hyundai developed their new transmission, the following are excerpts from the April 13, 2011 Chat at the ThinkTank:

Question Posed to Hyundai: In-house completely or licensed design from ZF?

Hyundai Answer: Replaced our current 6-speed AT line-up with an all-new, in-house developed 8-speed AT…

That jibes with everything I've read too. Made "not waiting" much easier. Not that I think Hyundai would risk the PR hit by putting out an untested, problem-ridden tranny, but the ZF is as close as you can get to a sure thing.
Happy with it (and the award winning Tao) in the Equus.

wow thats quite a story/ordeal. However it is nice to know that the owner/dealer made good on your situation. :>)
