  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi again.

Our dealer noticed during the 60k service a leaking strut on the front left. any owners here have a similar problem? This is my wife's vehicle and she loves it. with the extended warranty the deductible was her only cost. But it is concerning as repairs on the genesis are not cheap. She had a failed ABS sensor at the end of the factory warranty ($2020.00) covered but those are some serious dollars.

Has she ever hit anything?
Run over anything significant?
Any reason to cause premature wear on the struts?

strut replacement covered under warranty... good deal !

Please educate me folks... I'm coming from old school the shocks/struts need
to be replaced around 60K-75K miles. If there have been changes that extend the life please comment.

my buddy just brought his civic in for rear strut replacement... 130K Miles and he was charged $700... WOW... for two struts...

ppp

Did he take it to a Honda dealer? If so,
Unless it's under warranty, find the parts online and take them to a local mechanic for installation.

Or better yet, learn to turn a wrench and save hundreds.

Struts/shocks do last longer these days than shocks on older American cars. By that I mean they don't wear out as fast, but they do sometimes fail. Many newer struts/shocks, like the Genesis are enclosed inside coil springs, and there are several other brackets, etc, that need to be removed, so it is not so easy to replace them.

MSRP for front strut on a Genesis is about $193 each per online Hyundai parts website I often use. Most online sites sell them at a 20% discount from MSRP (no tax, but shipping is extra), but of course our local dealers are not likely to give that discount on parts when you get a repair estimate.

When I upgraded my 2009 suspension to 2011 specs, I paid about $615 at an independent suspension shop to have all four struts/shocks, 4 springs, and rear stabilizer replaced, which is significantly less than a dealer would charge. It probably doesn't take any longer to replace the springs if struts are replaced, since they have to remove them anyway. A wheel alignment is required after struts are replaced, so that must be included in the price.

On the Genesis, they call the front ones struts, and the rear one's shocks. The rear shocks are a little bit less expensive than the struts.

So the Honda dealer is probably not out of line, although one probably could get done a little cheaper by purchasing the parts and having it done at an independent suspension shop. I would not let a general purpose shop do it unless it was at the dealer.

Thanks for the info guys.

wont bore you with the details. I thought $700 was high too...

Did the dealer just replace the one strut or both front struts? In my experience, shocks or struts should always be replaced in pairs. $2020 sounds like an awful lot, but if it included both struts, bushings and an alignment, then it is probably within 'dealer' reason.;)

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

'The $2,020 was for the ABS sensor, not the struts.

:o you're right.
Well $2020 seems like a huge amount for an ABS sensor too!
Question still stands regarding the struts - did the dealer replace both or just the failed unit?

My mistake. It was not the sensors, which are considerably cheaper. It was the ABS controller (or Modulator valve, which I assume has some sort of computer in it). Here is the part from an on-line parts website:

Anti-lock brakes, Modulator valve
Genesis, 3.8L
List Price : $1,868.42
Your Price : $1,494.74

4.6 V8 part number is apparently different, but exact same price.

Front ABS sensors are about $100 and rear sensors are about $172 (MSRP).

Thanks for the replies. All helpful. Yes it was the sensor/moderator which cost the 2K and change. I don't know if they replaced both struts and I will ask them if they did and follow up. My reason for asking is that this seems to be some early repairs (struts) and early failure (ABS). If that is the case with the Genesis as we approach the 100k end of warranty I might encourage her to think over options.

I do not recall seeing any mention of someone else having a strut failure on this forum before (which is no guarantee that it wasn't mentioned, but certainly not a common problem). Most likely yours failed due to hitting a pothole or something.

The ABS brake module is a different matter, and apparently they are starting to go bad on 2009 and 2010 model years, resulting is brake failure, which unfortunately appears to be intermittent.

The standard original owner (or CPO) 100K warranty is for drivetrain only (engine and transmission) and would not cover brakes or suspension parts (these are covered in 60 month / 60,000 mile warranty). Of course, some have purchased an extended 100K mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

I am not sure that Hyundai will replace struts on both sides under warranty if only one fails. Personally, I would not worry about it, since they don't wear out as fast as the old style shocks.

Yes it is an after market bumper to bumper warranty. Have yet to get down there to ask about the other strut.

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but i was curious to know mark if after you went to 2011 specs if the ride quality was any better and was there any other differences you could feel?

My dealer wants $399.00 each for rear shocks and $175.00/hr labor. Only for the Genesis'.
