  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I'm trying to figure out if this is an issue, or just another weird quirk with a new platform car. I've had 4 cars with sunroofs now, a 96 Audi A6, a 2009 Sonata Limited, a 2011 Sonata Limited, and my 2015 Genesis Ultimate AWD. In every car but the genesis, I could VENT the sunroof while it was raining (it never mattered how hard it was raining), and as long as the car had some forward motion, water wasn't an issue. This weekend, I'm running errands in the rain, and I've got the sunroof vented again. After about 10 minutes, I notice water near the a-pillar seams inside the car. I've attached pictures. I'm inclined to think this means that a vent tube for the sunroof is clogged somewhere, but upon reviewing a parts list for the sunroof assembly, I don't see anything about a drain?!?! So a few questions:
  1. Is this behavior abnormal? Should I be able to vent the sunroof while it's raining?
  2. Does the sunroof have drainage tubing, and if so, where is it located?
  3. Do I need to have the dealer look at this while I'm still under warranty?
I've never encountered this issue before, hence the ask.
Thanks,
BigdogBTS

Um. You're crazy if you think sunroof drains are intended to function with the roof open. Or for that matter open the sunroof in the rain at all. That puts water (and associated debris!) places it's never supposed to go in quantities the emergency drains were not designed to handle.

As far as the drains themselves, they run down the A and B pillars. The C pillar has a drain with the panoramic option. Cleaning them is a right nightmare and you should never be introducing dirt like you are.

Then I (and a large portion of car drivers out there after a quick google search) must be crazy. This wasn't some kind of intense, flash-flood kind of rain. This was a rain that caused the automatic wipers to kick on less frequently than the lowest intermittent speed. Hell, here's an entire thread on a BMW board about how a tilted sunroof is ok in the rain. I've always done this, and never had an issue with the Audi (which I owned for more than 10 years), or either of the two other Hyundai automobiles that I've owned. There's no need to be so condescending. Looks like my drains must be clogged (I'm not the original owner of the car), so I guess I'm headed to the dealer.

methinks your tubes are clogged.

I like you vent in the rain as long as it isn't a hard downpour, a mild mist to light sprinkle, by all means as long as the vehicle is moving forward at 20mph or faster the airflow over the roof keeps the water moving toward the rear of the vehicle and not into the drains.

heck this morning it was a heavy mist and I had the roof full open, at 75mph the water never enters the car, and the windscreen keeps it flowing over the roof.

I will say this however. my G80 is by far the worst vehicle with a sunroof, that I have ever owned; with regards to the amount of dirt that accumulates in the track area from normal (not rain) full open use.

Hello dear , tilting / opening the sunroof in even slight rain is not recommended on the genesis sedan . I restrict myself to opening the inner shade and enjoying the rain from within the car .

I know it works on a bmw , i hsve tired it myself once or twice . But my sunroof is smaller on bmw.

The hyundai genesis sunroof is not the strong positive feature of the car . You might be seeing leakeage in drain tube and should see a dealer . Get the compete sunroof checked , and see if you can ask them to lubricate it , there is some white paste they put .

All the best .
