  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was driving today. closed my sunroof, so i could better hear a phone call. 30 seconds later I hear a loud noise, and my sunroof disintegrates. no impact from anything. it actually caved out, not in.
i called the dealer who promptly arranged for a loaner. they also had hyundai engineer contact me immediately. lets see how this goes, but so far they are handling things very well.

other crappy thing is, pieces of glass from the sunroof, flew off and scraped the paint on the roof and trunk.

Not common, but heard of. A couple of other Hyundai models have had this issue as well. Sonata to name one. I'm sure if will be covered under warranty.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
the sudden loud sound, coupled with the falling glass, scared the $hit out of me

you think they will pay to have my pants dry-cleaned? :-)

Did you have the sunroof tinted by any chance?

Wow, that's scary, especially as a fellow Texan.

Happens on bmws more often then you think... saddened to hear hyundai too.

my car is 100% factory original. even the hyundai badges are intact

Yep the people that do not swap out the badges are the ones that experience blown out sunroofs. "Studies Show" :D

That sucks! I was cleaning my car and was pressing down on the sunroof and thought to myself I better not press so hard.

I have a '90 Isuzu SpaceCab that has 'bronzed' glass for the 'rear' seat windows. One day, for no reason, the passenger-side (bronzed) glass just aft of the passenger seat shattered for no reason. At least not one I could see...

It is possible a stone or rock flipped up off the road and landed on your sunroof and bounced off, not leaving a trace of itself. I think that is what happened to my bronzed glass...I did happen to be passing a vehicle and it's possible a stone got thrown up....

I can see where a rock flipped off the road can shatter a vertically-oriented window - last year, a rock caused a large crack in my windshield, which had to be replaced. But I don't see how that would apply to a sunroof, since the rock's impact velocity would be much lower. The fact that the sunroof disintegrated up and out also doesn't fit with a rock impact. I think that a manufacturing defect that led to weakness or too much tension in the glass is more plausible.

It's not a problem caused by tinting the sunroof, its almost certainly a defect in the glass itself, or in the way it was installed.

I researched that extensively (including using contacts made thru this forum) and by contacting the manufacturers directly.

It is safe to tint the sunroof without fear of the sunroof cracking.

I live in Florida, lots of sun, lots of heat, and my car is black... a real heat sink!

I have to say, so far Hyundai is stepping up
they are replacing my sunroof, and fixing the damage from the pieces of glass that flew off after the roof was broken (while driving to the dealer).
we will see how things are fixed. i have no complaints so far about Hyundai or my dealer.

I read about this issue on the web, and it is a problem that happened to many automobile manufacturers. some did the right thing and paid to fix it, others tried to weasel out of covering an obvious manufacturer defect. so far so good with Hyundai...

yes good to hear !

i know if it was BMW... you'd have a $3-4k repair bill (before any paint repair) and a massive fight with the dealer and with bmw to cover the damages.

WAY too many sunroofs with upward explosive indicators.

If BMW paid for the repair it would admit fault... I'm willing to accept some glass in sunroof's have imperfections that show up down the road... doesnt mean im going to chastise bmw or hyundai for it.. just fix my car under the warranty period.
