  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

sunroof spontaneously shatters

I have to say, so far Hyundai is stepping up
they are replacing my sunroof, and fixing the damage from the pieces of glass that flew off after the roof was broken (while driving to the dealer).
we will see how things are fixed. i have no complaints so far about Hyundai or my dealer.

I read about this issue on the web, and it is a problem that happened to many automobile manufacturers. some did the right thing and paid to fix it, others tried to weasel out of covering an obvious manufacturer defect. so far so good with Hyundai...

It's nice to hear they are taking care of this, way too many times dealers try to push the "blame" onto the customers in an effort to make $$. Please let us know what the final outcome is....thanks :)

A rock that is traveling on a downwards trajectory can be moving at a pretty good clip and would not necessarily be of a slower velocity. It's velocity is being aided by gravity and depending on the trajectory could be nearly vertical. It hits, and bounces while the glass behind it shatters. It could have been something like a bolt as well. I have a motorcycle friend who, had she not been wearing a helmet, would have been knocked off her bike when a truck tire threw up a HUGE bolt off the pavement that hit busted her windshield and cracked her helmet. A bolt can have a lot of mass and momentum when it hits.

I can see where a rock flipped off the road can shatter a vertically-oriented window - last year, a rock caused a large crack in my windshield, which had to be replaced. But I don't see how that would apply to a sunroof, since the rock's impact velocity would be much lower. The fact that the sunroof disintegrated up and out also doesn't fit with a rock impact. I think that a manufacturing defect that led to weakness or too much tension in the glass is more plausible.

Unless the projectile's trajectory started with a downward component - unlikely for a rock flung up from the roadway - its downward velocity at impact would be entirely governed by gravity, no?

In any case, I think that failure of the glass without a rock impact is more likely, though it's theoretically possible that even a vertical strike from a small rock could shatter a defective sunroof.

Your point about the danger from flying debris is well-taken, though. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do to guard against it, apart from keeping a safe distance behind trucks. (I usually like to keep at least one car between me and the truck ahead.)

(I'm happy that Hyundai is taking care of this, BTW.)

the sudden loud sound, coupled with the falling glass, scared the $hit out of me

you think they will pay to have my pants dry-cleaned? :-)

No dry cleaning...but when they replace the sunroof they'll throw in a spare pare of pants.

Appears they may have a recall of Veloster model for exactly same problem on panoramic roof...but to be fair I am not sure if this is fixed portion or a sunroof. If fixed torsion twist alone could cause it.

Just had the plastic guides replaced on my sunroof -under warranty.

It seems for whatever reason the guides cracked and disabled the sunroof altogether
-just fyi
