  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone experienced this in their Genesis? Either in park or stopped with my foot on the brake. I can feel it in the seat of my pants and in the steering wheel and armrest. Surges about every 2-3 seconds. Getting the oil changed in 3 weeks and will have them look at it, just seems odd.

Is this not common when idling? Even new cars I have had seemed to send a vibration every 2 to 5 seconds. Kinda reminded me of the cup of water in Jurassic Park.

Initially, it worried me also, OP. I had just purchased a new challenger and it was doing that. Never had any issues after 3 years of ownership. Seemed more prevalent when the AC was on.

Mine has a horriable throbbing vibration and the warmer it gets outside with the AC on the worse it gets. The dealer won't touch it as they always say it's normal. It's sad as my 13 year old Camry on a 80+ degree day with the AC in max is smooth as can be. And the base model Elantra loaner I'm in now is also way smoother at idle with the AC on than my Genesis.

Tough to beat those 'yotas. My neighbor's 2002 Tundra had 500K miles on it when he got rid of it. His 2013 Camry has 300K miles on it. My father in law has a Sequoia with 500K miles on it. None of them have needed anything more than routine maintenance or cheap replacement parts. Pretty impressive.

My 5.0 will surge/run rough every now and again (once every couple of weeks) under those conditions briefly, then chill out... I'm starting to believe that it's the gas that I sometimes use (no name gas from local supermarket chain), haven't observed it when running Top Tier. I'll have to observe it more closely...

I think it's more of an idle issue with the idle just a bit too low at a full stop under load. On mine with the auto hold on it's really bad when at a complete stop but it you don't come to a complete stop and just ever so slightly let the car roll a bit the vibration almost completely goes away on mine since the rpm's are about 100 higher when you let off the brake. I asked my dealer in the past to just raise the rpm by 100 and they refused saying it can't be adjusted at all. Thought about looking into a higher amp battery and higher output alternator to see if that would help at all.

I'm fairly sure it can be adjusted. They just don't want to do it.

I've seen this "ultra low idle" in a lot of newer cars - guess it's a gas saving strategy.

I notice the surging happens only when my A/C is on. If I turn it down to its lowest setting, the surging isn't really noticable. However, when my A/C setting is higher, the surging increases and almost becomes a droning that sometimes gives me or my passengers a slight headache. The dealership just brushes me off.

Winner winner.

I did a little more poking around and narrowed it down like you suggested to only happening when the AC is on and cranked up. Had the car in at the dealer for an oil change today, described the symptoms, and the dealership diagnosed it as a failing AC compressor.

They ordered a replacement and scheduled me in next week to get it replaced under warranty.
