  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have had a 2010 3.8 for 6 months now----The problem I have, and have had, is the hard hard ride.....It never has "softened up" and everybody who rides in the car brings it to my attention too......Sort of takes the joy out of what otherwise would be a great car.....Will have to get rid of it soon as I cant take the jarring bumpy ride about town, every day, day after day a jarring ride.........Its great on the hwy but I dont ride the highway that much.....very disappointed

Safe to assume your test drive was on the highway? And that you've checked your tire pressure?
Curiosity: what were you driving before the Gen?
Sorry to hear your woes...:(

Welcome to the club. This is something we have complained about for a loooooooooong time. True. Its not going to get any better. I wonder how many sales Genesis has lost from people asking questions of owners? I know in my case, when people ask me how I like the car, tell them that I will not pull any punches. (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly). I tell them that the car is great in most respects, EXCEPT for one thing. The ride is like a Freight Car. Hard. Stiff. Not a quality ride.

Just something I have to live with, and will question if I want another one, either as a replacement for my wifes Continental, or as a new one for myself.

(I'm just waiting for Lincoln to come out with better looking cars, although I drove the MKS and the ride and power were just fine, I just can't get over the UGLY looks of the car, and would love for them to bring out a good looking Continental again).

Agreed. Lincoln's to my eye are just not attractive. That waterfall grill they have going is just garish to me.

This was the exact conversation I had the other day with someone. They were completely surprised as they have ridden in other Hyundai products and commented on how nice they rode.

OTOH my boss who drives a G35 Coupe thinks the ride is good.

I must be missing something here. Most of the cars I have had have been towards the sporting side so I guess I am used to the stiffer ride. I have now had my Genesis for 4 months and had plenty of time to drive over all types of roads. I can say with absolutely certainty that I find nothing objectionable about the ride or handling of my Genesis. Now the BMW I have is another story. The tires and springs are rock hard and the car shutters and rattles over any bump in the road. The run flat tires are like solid rubber with no compliance what so ever. I think that people coming from the Town Car, DeVille, Lexus, Buick type of car will find the ride of the Genesis somewhat harsh, I have driven those cars and know exactly where they are coming from. It all depends on whether you are looking for a luxury car or a sport/luxury car. If you honestly analyze that question then you will know what direction to go for the next car.

The car is so good otherwise. I've given myself another six months before trading it in (probably for a Lexus). What I hope for is a solution that would keep me in the car. I love its looks, both interior and exterior, the 6 cylinder engine is excellent, the brakes are phenomenal, the sound system is sweet...I want to keep this car but not if I have to confirm every minor bump in the road!

I have owned just about every brand and the genesis does ride a little on the hard side. It definitely is not for the person looking for a soft ride, but for me it's fine. When i want a soft ride i jump in my rx350 and feel like i am on feathers. I love the car because it has good power and corners awesome..

Yep. I'm interested in hearing/reading what car he drove 6 months ago. His only previous posts were about poor bass in the 7 speaker model, but nothing since June. If coming from an Avalon i guess it's understandable. Though it still doesn't answer the test drive question.

Honestly, the test drive can't always reveal everything. I'm sure I've mentioned coming out of two Avalons (03 & 06) so I was totally used to a soft ride. When I drove the Genesis I knew it was firmer and figured that everything else was so nice on the car that I could live with the firmer ride.

What I failed to notice on two different test drives was just how badly this car rides on poor surfaces. Its just way too nervous and unsettled for my tastes. My commute is taking me through a construction zone and its just horrible. Every bump is transmitted though the steering wheel and you get bounced around pretty good. I am not embellishing. My GFs 08 Elantra handles it better as does the Pacifica we have at the office.

Ran across a copy of the May 2010 Motor Trend and the "Long Term Test Update" for the 2009 Genesis 4.6. They were not kind when talking about the suspension. (Not kind, but truthfull).

"the suspension is downright wrong -- too harsh, too unforgiving. Plain and simple, it's the wrong suspension tuning for a car with the purpose of this one."

"In fact, I'll go as far as to say the suspension tuning in this car is inferior to those of mainstream sedans, like Camry, Accord, or even Hyundai's own Sonata".

This was after 13 months of testing and 21,280 miles. Don't remember seeing this before, so I thought you would like to know. My understanding from owners of 2010's and perhaps 2011's is that the suspension is no better, at least for the 4.6 V8's.

I think the verdict part of the Motor Trend test says it all "our Genesis sedan entered long-term duty in the Motor Trend test fleet with some pretty heavy expectations and plenty of anticipation. After all, this was a car that had nearly won our 2009 Car of the Year award just months prior. The Genesis didn't disappoint, instantly becoming a staff favorite and rarely spending a night alone in the staff garage. ….We were impressed with the reliability, performance, and overall quality of our Genesis 4.6, especially for the value-packed entry price. As a first attempt at a whole new ball game, Hyundai has a solid base hit on its hands with the Genesis. With that foundation, we suspect that the second-generation car may be a home run."

Hmmm..

I test drove a 2009 V6 and a 2011 V6 Genesis and I never found the ride harsh in either instance. Maybe it's a personal preference thing?

Yep...my thoughts exactly. Is this a deal breaker? Is this something I can live with for the next 3 plus years? I most certainly will not. Please for the love of god somebody produce a fix. Monroe are you listening? I sank 800 into new tires (Michilen Primacy MXV4, the smoothest, best according to tirerack.com and consumer reports) and it is a "tad" better. The nature of the suspension still comes harshly through. I thought I would give this experiment a year and then its time to move on (can you say Lexus). Still it such a good idea (a heretofore econobox producer challenging the big boys!) and I so wanted it to work.

I am mostly satisfied with my Genesis after doing the suspension upgrade from 09 to the 10. I am happy to see that the ride will get slightly better when upgrading the tires. I think that the V8's may have a little more of an unsettled ride due to the weight issue. The early 09 issues were springs overloading the shocks and too much sway. I would venture to say that people do not like the firmness of the ride. I have owned some firm riding cars over the years and maybe that is why it does not bother me as much. I will keep this car 3-5 years.

Hi Guys:

I am a new owner (2010-3.8). my last two cars were maximas and were on sport suspension. I actually like the ride of genesis. It's stiff and keeps me close to ground. I like it. I hope it stays that way. No matter, how much of a bump or bad road, I always come right back to ground. Feel more controlled. I guess it's a personal preference. Toyota/Lexus is more on the softer side, generally speaking. That's what my dad has been driving for years and that's the impression I get when I drive them.

This is why I hate it when people here say that the suspension changes from year to year and that potential buyers should expect better rides than what they may have experienced. Hyundais ride firm - that is the character of their cars. The ride will not change without a custom suspension, and like all car forums (I've come to read up and see), there are always people complaining about the ride characteristics.

Like they say, don't buy a small pair of pants with the expectation that you will lose weight and fit into them, and don't buy a car and expect that the ride characteristics will change.

The 2010/2011 ride is firm and fine. People fail to point out that the design defect that was corrected in the mid 2009 model year of fixing the issue of the springs overloading the shocks. I am happy with the ride and control of the suspension after upgrading my suspension from 09 to 10.

Chris -- what kind of cost is associated with that upgrade? Did you dealer execute it? Tx.
