Hi,

I have a 2012 3.8 Sedan with 125k miles. It's time to replace the shocks. Does anyone have part #'s that i need to buy for my car? I am looking for the most comfortable ride possible, what's the best bang for the buck solution? Also, is there anything else that I should change at the same time we're doing this? I have a friend who is a full time mechanic that will be doing the actual work on a lift.

Unfortunately there are only 2 options currently in production. 1 is Genuine Hyundai replacement shocks and 2 is the coil-over kit from Meghan Racing. both are around $750-$1000 to do all 4. If you only need to do the front then I would recommend getting the OE Hyundai shocks since they can be purchased individually whereas the Meghan kit is only sold as a 4 corner set.
I don't work for a dealership, the one all the links are to just seems to offer the best prices on 1st Gen Genesis parts. I have ordered from them a few times.
Be cautious of amazon searches, they will list shocks for the 2 door coupe as being compatible with the 4 door, THEY ARE NOT.
Also, the Meghan kit will certainly improve the handling but I don't know what it does as far as ride comfort. I believe there was/is a whole thread about them somewhere on here.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. Would you replace all of those parts now? or just the shocks? I dont know if springs and the other parts go bad or not as fast as shocks. I think i'll stick with stock.
 
I would certainly replace the upper and lower spring insulators in the front, considering that you will have to disassemble the strut anyways you might as well, they are cheap parts. as for the dust cover and the bump stop, if they are in good shape then you can reuse them no problem. The springs should be fine unless you notice the car leans to one side or another, or if you drive a very hilly or bumpy route daily.
 
Look into BR racing's coil over's. The rspec kit fits all models. I am very happy with them. very solid and still comfortable enough for me.
 
I have the BCs they're more comfortable than I thought they would be but it is a bit bouncy. I'd stick with stock unless you want sportier handling. Rear shocks are easy to replace, fronts will require a spring compressor. I'll second replacing the isolators to prevent noise. Springs do sag over time and may start to allow the front camber to be out of spec but as long as they're not broken or rusted you should be fine without them.

You don’t need to compress the springs. Just put the car on jackstands and all tension is released. If your ride is too bouncy, adjust the shock settings. You have them too hard
 
I'm talking about the factory springs. They are most certainly under tension when the wheels are off the ground. The coilovers are not under tension unless you set preload but even then it's not much. I could mess with the settings but I'm selling it in the near future since I got a new car so I'm not really worried about it.

Yeah you're right about needing to compress the stock springs. I thought you were talking about the BC coils. If you swap your oem's with new coils, you wont need to compress them. my BC's were all set perfect from the factory. i counted every thread. Easy swap.

You're in luck my 1st genesis was totaled but I found a mint condition 2013 gem to replace it and it only had 10.945 on the odo. I just swapped my Ds series bc coils over and have the full set of OEM shocks n struts ready to go to the point you could just do a straight swap without having to mess with compressing any springs.

I'm the 2nd owner 1st owner had all services done at hyundai dealership while he had it. Long story short it was an older gentleman's weekend warrior he went through a divorce and instead of losing it to his ex wife he put it up for sale at his best friends dealership. I reaped the rewards. These things are in great condition. And I'm definitely willing to let them go less than 700 and I'm in CA way closer than korea haha

I can do the struts at a local do it yourself shop at 30 bucks an hour. Let's say 5 hours. So let's say 150 for labor.

That's 1350 parts and labor.

I decide to go with the coilovers from Megan racing. 750 shipped to.my door.

Took 8 hours to install and set up and adjust to my liking.

Cost me about 1k all in all. And I'm pretty happy with the result. My vehicle is lowered slightly and it handles great and the ride quality is still pretty good.

The one complaint I had about the Megan's is the rear coils as adjusted all the way down the vehicle was still stock height. So I had to remove both adjusting collars to get it lower. Which removes any height adjustments.

What I can digest is the spring height and the base where the spring perches are just too tall and they overlooked it

Bit I still like it

Still probably wouldve went with bc if you wanted coils.. but you got new Megan's for the price you wouldve got some used bc. It definitely would have addressed the rear height prob. But looks good nonetheless. Good to know what the dealership price is. Sadd to know they charge 1200 for parts when the actual retail of those parts online is 750 lol
