  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

New 2019 G70 owner here. Love the car but slightly confused about how the radio presets work.

On the main (default) screen, pressing the preset button up on the steering wheel switches to the next highest preset (preset 2 to 3, although you can’t see this list on the screen).

When on the radio station list, pressing the preset button up switches to the next lowest preset (preset 2 to 1). Is this the way it is supposed to work?

Also, if you want to rearrange presets, is there an easy way to do that?

Rick

That's how it works. Odd for sure. You can't rearrange things. You have to replace each spot with the station you want.

Common complaint.

Oh, man. Where's my post on why this makes sense....

Right before my last post explaining why it makes no sense. Steering wheel controls are for safety so you can do things and not take your eyes off the road. Reversing the way it works under certain conditions is dumb. Other controls still work the same way as they should.

But Ed, show me any other control with a directional GUI. There isn't one in the car.

The only hope is for them is to adopt a right to left list in a future update.

I had the exact question a couple weeks ago.

The logic is that when you can "see" the numbers, the button follows that layout. But when you cannot see the numbers, you press up to increase the pre-sets numbers, down to decrease the numbers.

Yeah I wish it was consistent.

Doesn't matter. Memory is the key to simple use. Having it change directions depending on the screen is not intuitive.
The volume button works the same way. The temperature controls work the same way. Every control in every car works the same way no matter the conditions. This one being different makes no sense. Same with boats, same with airplanes, same with home appliances.

Agree and disagree at the same time. As I've always maintained here, think about how weird it would be to be looking at the list of stations... You press up on the wheel and the station list goes down visually!

The number #1 criteria in user interface design is “what does the user expect?” And after that it is “behave in a consistent manner.” A computer programmer knows that when the list isn’t displaying, up increases the number. But the user isn’t a computer.

But it does do what I want. You want a different thing.

In my car (and in the video of the G80), that is not what it does. When in Radio mode, pressing down moves the selection visually down. As the video shows, pressing down moves from P1 to P2 to P3 which is visually down. Radio mode sorts the pre-select list in ascending order.

Your car does it differently?

That is what it does. But, while on radio down stitch goes from preset 2 to 3, etc. On the home screen down switch goes from 3 to 2.

It’s hard to explain personal preference so that’s why people are entitled to their opinions. And humans survive because they are adaptable so getting ‘used’ to something is natural.

This radio selection is a small thing but obviously contentious. I’m with Ed though, when it comes to safety, controls should be as consistent as possible. Somebody chose (or it was an oversight) to make this particular control inconsistent.

Here’s one of my posts from earlier:
What things don't you like in the G70?

Ok, but that’s my point. Radio screen sorts the list in ascending order 1, 2, 3... Home screen (and others) sorts the list in descending order 3, 2, 1...

Why create this confusion?

I prefer 1, 2, 3 everywhere but can live with 3, 2,1. I think they should have picked one or the other for more consistency.

I have never changed channels with the buttons or the steering wheel. We only use the voice button on the steering wheel and speak the channel we want. Never fails to be correct.
Besides the smart cruise this is maybe best feature on the car. Never take eyes off road, just talk.

The operation is no different than my Verizon Fios TV remote. Sometimes you press the up arrow to go up in channel numbers. In other views you press up arrow to go down in channel numbers. It’s not a deal breaker.

simple - up is down, down is up

I think it's funny so many people are so particular with this one thing. I couldn't care less, and I've never had any difficulty or problems selecting which channel/station I want, using the steering wheel up/down selector. Lol. Makes sense to me. *shrug*
