I've got a 16 genesis awd with about 60k on it and just did my first synthetic oil change. Cost was quite a bit more so Im wondering if its really worth it for this car and how long I can go between changes now? I was going around 5k between changes with regular oil...thanks

I put Mobil 1 in mine and their recommendation is up to 15k or one-year, whichever comes first. Regardless, I usually do mine at least once a year but I also don't rack up the miles.

Also FYI, while it costs more at the dealer, you're better off purchasing the oil on sale (often) and bring it to the dealer and the charge is about ~$25 to do the change. There are quite a few out here that do exactly that. Let's you keep her purring along better and cheaper overall in the long run.

Synthetic is the best you can get and it will give the longest time between changes. You should be able to go 10,000 miles. Mobil 1 has one they say is good for 1 year or 20,000 miles. Others are 15,000 miles. Other brands have similar claims.

There are also some excellent blends you may want to consider. Not knowing your climate and driving conditions no one here can give an absolute recommendation but oil is cheaper than engine rebuilds. If you go with a blend I'd go for no more than 7500 miles, depending on conditions.

I could never understand the mind set of trying to save a couple bucks by running oil 15k between changes. My thought is what about the oil filter itself. How efficient is that filter after 7500 miles? It is one of those subjects that can be hashed out all day.

Back in the early 1980s we had company cars with a full maintenance lease from Avis. Firestone did the oil changes. I forget the miles between, but they only paid for a filter every other change. Really? Filters are cheap and easy to change. It would probably add $1.25 to the monthly lease payment.

Walmart has the best price on oil. I change mine at the 3750 interval because I don't drive often. Like to change the oil every 6 months. Coming up on 5 years old with just 37000 miles.

LOL. I use Valvoline synthetic oil and still change my oil every 4k miles or so. Oil is one thing I do not skimp on since it is the most important fluid in the engine.

I still change my oil no longer than 4k miles even with synthetic oil due to the plastic timing chain guides in this engine that tend to fail when not properly lubricated even if the timing chain does not stretch which requires engine disassembly to replace.

Many early 2000's BMW timing chain guides failed victim to the 10k mile oil change interval as well as many early GM 3.6 engine timing chain guides when GM had long oil change intervals. 10k miles oil changes seem to only benefit the dealership not the owner in the long term.

The newer oils can still be slippery over 10 k miles, however the detergent packages that reduces acidity and sludge in the engine usually becomes inert well before 10k miles which leads to the break down of components like timing chain guides and and clog chain tensioners.

The rule I follow: Longer oil changes for cars that I will dump by 100k miles; shorter oil changes for cars that I will keep for over 100k miles

Doesn’t matter how long your oil lasts, the filter shouldn’t be pushed more than 10-12k between changes.

Your high end synthetics will be stable till 20k or even more, the direct injection engines have far less fuel contamination issues than older port injected models. The detergents and additives are still fine as well, if you’re getting sludge with synthetics you have engine problems anyway.

The source for your contamination still comes via the PCV system and general operation, the air isn’t going to be clean and that’s what gets in the oil. Plus combustion carbon will get past the rings in small quantities. Oil Filter picks out most of that if it’s a quality brand, but on this car it’s extremely small.

Walmart almost always has the 5-Quart on Sale for $25.47 (Mobil 1 10W-30 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5QT - Walmart.com. While Costco often has the 6-Qt. Case on sale as well (https://www.costco.com/Mobil-1-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-10W-30.product.100169793.html).

Mobil 1 often runs a rebate (easy to submit online and have always received the check within 2 mos.) of $17 on the 5-Qt. (https://www.costco.com/Mobil-1-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-10W-30.product.100169793.html). Sadly this just ended again 9/30, but it does come back.

Neither Walmart nor Costco are listed as a participating retailer, but it's a known fact that Mobil 1 honors Walmart. I myself have submitted no less than 6 rebates over the past 5 years (multiple rebates were accepted), I usually do two at a time. The one-time I bought from Costco the rebate wasn't being offered, so can't vouch for that.

My Walmart purchases amounted to $27.25 (w/tax) less $17; roughly 10 bucks for 5-Qts. - Unbeatable imo. Even without the rebate, you're looking at about $5 plus change per Qt., still a great deal.

I buy Pennzoil Full Synthetic, since they have decently high ratings. Shell owns both Pennzoil and Quaker State. If memory serves, Quaker State is recommended by Hyundai/Genesis. So I figured, I'll just buy from the same brand.

Follow the manual. Regardless of mileage at least every 6 months. Do you really want to give Hyundai/Genesis an excuse to refuse a major warranty claim?
