hey guys long time,

i write today about a very worrisome problem, speaker rattle.

some history, '09 4.6 genesis with tech pkg. I listen to a lot of house music (dance/electronic) and sometimes rap. the current setting for the low/bass range is 3 ticks to a complete max out of bass.

i've had this car for about 14 months now, and the speaker rattling problem became first apparent in the fall of '10, around sept/oct time. at first it was a very gentle rattle which i gave fault to a low quality mp3 file. but i continued to really make use of the 500w, 17 speaker system and gradually the speaker rattle became almost a constant.

when i listen to music, on avg the volume # ranges from 10-12. when i feel like going out or enjoy a song i crank it to 14-18. and when i go out on weekends i sometimes crank it to 20-24. but for the owners of the tech pkg, you guys know that even at these ranges, it doesn't even utilize HALF the volume range that is given. i think max is like 50 or something.

my mileage is at 13K, and the next time i go in is right before 15K, so that i can utilize my stereo warranty if need be.

my question to you guys is, i'm sure some of us here really put to test the amazing sound system of our tech pkg cars, do you guys also ever sense a rattle?

the rattles are coming from the back-mid (sub woofer?) speaker, and the back sides speakers. never the front or tweeters. some tones of deep bass does not set off a rattle. but the average bass/snare combo does set it off.

please help with advice, and share your experiences with speaker rattling. its just not right for a luxury car to have this problem.

is it easy of a fix as telling the dealership to just tighten all the speakers? what causes speaker rattle? do you think my speakers can be replaced?

thanks a bunch. and now that i think about it, i'm probably the youngest genesis 4.6 owner here, so don't tell me i'm listening to my music to loudly and its my fault. the genesis should be handling this with ease. thanks!

Sounds like you are hearing the rear sun shade rattle. I can hear mine rattle every once in a while at certain frequencies, and so far there is nothing that can be done about. I notice it happens with the sunshade up or down also.

scott, good to see you are still active on these boards. i never thought it could be the sun shade. i will test to see if it rattles when the sun shade is fully extended. thanks

It could also be the cover on the inside of the trunk (remember the one that many of us had to ask the dealer to install since it wasn't present on early 09s?). Mine must have not been put in 100% properly and rattles even with my mid-level (non-tech) Lexicon.

I've had rattles from the front doors from the beginning.
Had to spend hours sound deadening the doors and it made a huge difference.
Now that the weather got colder, I'm hearing rattles from the dash vents and sometime from the passenger's side door.
Drives me nuts.
My bass setting is @ about +3~+4 for DVD-A discs.
Jazz with deep bass makes the door panels rattle from time to time with an occasional rear deck/sun shade rattle.
Looks like I need to spend more time sound proofing the whole car when the weather warms up.

big update:

so i went into the dealership today for my 15K check up and told them about the speaker rattling problem and guess what, i have a torn subwoofer.

i asked how big the tear was and he said it actually has gone all around the speaker and its been creating the terrible rattle. they ordered a new subwoofer covered under warranty and will be getting it replaced sometime next week. I'll keep you guys updated!

I assume blasting deep house music in cold weather over the 2 winters can do that to the subs.

Great news, glad they're taking care of it. I admire your patience in waiting so long. I couldn't have done it.

With your bass turned up to full, it is possible that you have overdriven the voice coils in the speakers. Is the rattle comming from the speaker itself or from surounding areas? If it is coming from the speakers, you may need to have them replaced.

I'd be hesitant to believe that Lexicon overdrove their speakers by so much that you could blow them out. I'd expect more from them. Can anyone comment on this?

A lot depends on the input signal. I am sure you have experienced the difference in volume from different recordings. Now, crank your base up full and any amplifier can be over driven. Just a fact, as painful as it can be.

I also have a metallic rattle in the driver's side door when I turn the stereo up to about 17. What did you use for sound reduction in your doors and did you have to replace the door trim clips with new ones?

I assume that question was directed at me.
The rattle on my doors was coming from the 'L' shaped metal bracket inside the door panel where it attaches the inside sheet metal to the plastic door panel(interior).
It fastens the plastic door panel to the door itself with a screw(philips as I recall) which is located underneath the rubber cover placed inside the door handle/pocket.

I used dynamat-like sound deadening material and shoved it between the inner door skin(sheet metal) and the L-bracket.
Took care of that metallic vibration completely.
After that, vibration is audible from the window/mirror switch assembly. UGH!
Disassembled the whole unit and used some sticky foam and eliminated those.

It worked okay for a while, then all these other rattles start to come out of nowhere.
Rear deck rattles like crazy when I play bass-heavy musics, and sometimes from the front dash board somewhere between the instrument panels and the dash air vents.

Drives me nuts and I gave up trying to eliminate them.
Got a ride in my co-workers '06 BMW 330i with the premium system. Although the sound system itself wasn't as good as the Lexicon, that car had ABSOLUTELY NO RATTLE WHATSOEVER from the interior.
Talk about solid build-quality.

One of those things where you fix the noisiest squeeks and then you start hearing everything else that wasn't noticeable with the previous squeeks. That would drive me nuts.
I hear rattles coming from my back window area too, but can't determine if it is from the screen or one of the speakers in the back. I'm actually a bit disappointed in just how little bass this system puts out. My stock non-Bose stereo in my Murano that I traded in for this Gen put out much better bass. Other than the back I haven't noticed any other as noticeable rattles. Perhaps I should grab a flashlight and check out the speaker condition as well just in case.

well hopefully it was just a bad lexicon sub then. but i think it really has something to do with bumping the bass in harsh cold temperatures.

i realized the lexicon 500w 17 speaker system is too much for the genesis sedan. the encasement and material used around to enclose the speakers, especially the 3 in the back (including sub) is very weak and can't handle the speakers physical vibrating.

my speakers are fine and i am more careful now but i can hear the back enclosure vibrating a little at certain decibels. its not a biggy bc its very slight but yea.... just saying.

also if you guys hear vibrating and find out that its NOT from actual speaker damage like me, its more than likely its the back window automatic shade curtain that is vibrating.

My early 2009 does not have any trunk lining to cover the speakers. Is it possible to add that through the dealer?

I am also experiencing rattling in the rear of the car near the sub-woofer. At first I thought it was the sunshade, but now I think it is related more to the high mount stop light (or the rear deck connection to the metal) and its connection to the metal it is mounted to. If I open the trunk there are a few rectangular holes that I can insert my fingers into. If I maneuver them up through and press the metal of the trunk up, the rattling stops.

yes go to the dealership and they will give you the lining and install the cover for you for free

my genesis had a rattle too it sounds more like a connection issue though
