  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

"Hyundai Recalls 27,500 Genesis in U.S.

Hyundai said Tuesday it is recalling 27,500 Genesis premium sedans sold in the U.S. after more than 20 complaints about faulty ABS brakes.

The problem, Hyundai said, stems from corrosion in the brake valves.

The models affected by the recall were produced between April 2008 until March last year. Hyundai is also recalling around 9,000 of the 100,000 Genesis sold in Korea that were manufactured during the period.

A spokesman for the carmaker said the problem is due to "oil used in the brake modules slowly corroding the valves." The valves were made by German hydraulic brake manufacturer Continental, which discovered the problem early last year, and GM and other carmakers ended up recalling around 230,000 vehicles.

Hyundai said it will not replace the brake valves but inject new brake fluid with an anticorrosive additive.

Hyundai already changed the brake fluid of around 60 percent of the affected Genesis sold in the U.S. and around 91 percent of those sold in Korea.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday it has launched an investigation of the complaints filed by 23 Genesis owners."

Isnt this old news

Ah, yes, sorry. But I did not recall the part in this story about Hyundai stating that no ABS valves would be replaced. I thought this was the other shoe dropping.

So, the question remains. What is the latest status of this subject? Are all ABS valves getting replaced, or not?

The NHSTA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has opened an investigation (even after the brake fluid recall), but I have not heard anything yet. There is a link in another thread on this forum to the NHSTA site where they post documents related to this issue.

My ABS was just replaced via the recall after a brake failure (soft pedal). If the ABS needs replacement, wouldn't the master brake cylinder need replacement too?

The ABS module has copper (I think) in it, which is corroded via contact with DOT 3 fluid. No need to replace master cylinder unless it has the same material.

I believe that the some of critical valves int the HECU (ABS control module) prior to June 1, 2010 were zinc plated, which tends to easily corrode. I have not heard anything about replacing the master cylinder, except early on when the problem was mis-diagnosed by Hyundai dealers.

The brakes "just went out" on our 2009 Genesis. Just before this, car was brought to the dealer for recall, initially stated "nothing wrong" (didn't change brake fluid). I called Hyundai of America, which called dealer and had them change the brake fluid.

Right after this, brake problem surfaced. Took to another dealer, and the replacement unit is being done, for free.

Just had my recall completed. I didn't see any problems before or after, but I have a feeling of incompleteness about the whole thing. How do they know that there has been no corrosion if the ABS module isn't opened up and inspected? I intend to keep tabs on this entire issue, just changing the brake fluid might not completely make this go away.

They don't know. But opening the unit (made by Continental Automotive) is not an option. The only thing that makes this different than the Toyota/Lexus sudden acceleration problem that is costing Toyota over $1 billion in fines is that the Genesis sells in much lower numbers, so probably no has been killed yet.
