  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Cool! Thanks for finding this. I didn't know the 14-speaker system was also 7.1 (I figured 5.1). I wonder what makes the 17-speaker system "discrete"? ;)

This is right off the site but it can't be right.

To realize the performance advantages of the discrete Logic 7 surround sound system, the Hyundai Genesis’ power amplifier utilizes eleven channels with a total system amplification rating of over 500 watts. Nine channels are each capable of producing 40 watts from 20Hz to 20kHz with 10% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). Two subwoofer channels are each capable of producing 80 watts with 10% THD.

10% THD, is it a Dixie cup and string? I'm hoping they mean .1%.

10% total harmonic distortion is correct. The reason why is that all audio manufacturers inflate their watt ratings to make it sound like a huge amount of power. Sure, it might only put out 50 watts at .1% THD, and will sound great, but if you really wanted to get 500 watts of power out at 10% THD, you could do it.

All audio manufacturers, except the really high end, do this. They post a wattage rating of something like 10,000 watts, without telling you that it has 10% THD at that rating.

Real audiophiles would rather have a 25 watt amplifier with 0.01% THD, which would sound plenty loud with the proper speakers and source material, but unfortunately most consumers think Higher Wattage = better, and don't care about distortion.

THANK YOU!

the amplifier is capable of .1% thd.. with a 100% digital source, and the right encoding.. however.. you'd likely never get that with the DAC's in the CD/DVD player that's in the car.... lol.

When you start building a home theatre system around .1% THD, you need some $$, and some extreme source components.

edit: for an example of another company advertising .1% THD... look at Mark Levinson's mini site for Lexus ;) whom we all know is a subsidiary of Harman.. yada yada. On the food chain.. Levinson is a notch below Leixcon... I seriously doubt their car stereos produce that type of power, and Lexicon's does not. I'd actually bet my reputation on it.

in the stereo world, the term discrete is usually used to describe components or channels that are separate from each other...

for example. If you have the tech package. you have a tweeter, a mid range, and a "woofer" on each side of the cabin.

In a discrete setup, the amplifier, is facilitating the crossover of signals. Therefore, there is no need for a dedicated crossover in the door, for those 3 speakers. They are all running "discretely". Separately from each other.

Traditionally, you'd have a crossover, where each of those 3 speakers would junction, and 1 wire would run back to your amp. The amp would see 1 speaker, instead of 3.

technical definition:

Discrete
An audio signal (channel) that is independent of all other audio signals (channels) present in the software. A stream of sounds concurrently reproduced with, but not added to or subtracted from any other stream of sounds present in the software. Discrete signals remain completely independent of all of the other signals in the path of reproduction until the speakers convert their electrical information into sound waves in the listening environment.
