  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On 12-29, I took my 2018 G90 into my trusted Genesis dealer for the Blue Link/Google issue. I picked it up on 12-30.
On 12-31, I was heading to the gym and looked in my trunk to see that 2 cased/scoped rifles were missing. Upon further looking, I found that a bag containing 3 timepieces (Blancpain, Omega, and Panerai) was missing from the console. (I planned to take them in to the watchmaker for servicing which is why they were in there.). Finally, I looked in the glove box to see my Leatherman Charger and 2 USB drives were also missing.
Dealer told me another customer complained about theft from their automobile while in for service on 12-29/30. Other adjacent dealers reported thefts of spare tires up and down their lots.
Dealer did not have video on the lot during this obvious theft. Dealer also admitted to leaving car unlocked overnight.
I have made a report to the Sheriff and the dealer reported to the Police. I've received a confirmation call from the Police and have an incident report number from Sheriff.
My question: WHO is responsible for making me whole? What does this group suggest?
Thanks to all, in advance.

Garage Keepers Liability policy is what the dealership should be maintaining. Dealership is responsible when your vehicle is in their care, custody and control.

No they are not. All dealers I have been to have a sign that says not responsible for personal belongings.

Sorry but it is on you for leaving these items in your car. I always remove my Pistol and anything valuable before leaving my car anywhere overnight.

Sorry this happened but your insurance is your only recourse.

I also remove anything of value including my house keys and garage opener.

Same here. I keep the misc. stuff from the cars in the garage and put them back in when I get the car back. Even down to sunglasses etc.

I think this one could get a little tricky. You are responsible if they have met their obligation. If they have admitted to leaving the car unlocked and if was not in an enclosed/fenced area their garagekeepers liability may have to cover it. I would press the issue with them before filing a claim yourself.

What the dealer employee said to you regarding other thefts and, especially, that car was left unlocked may come to nothing once investigation by police and insurance begins. Person may deny making those comments, say you misunderstood, or admit nothing when it comes to the real record of evidence. No one has proof of anything at this point. Photos of car at dealer and items inside car? No. Testimony about status of car? No. Video of car and illegal entry? No. Record or memory of your conversation with employee about items you had in car and thus extra caution on their account about storage? No.

I'm surprised the dealer would not have video of the parking area. I guess you could make a claim the car was not locked but doubt it would matter much.

You can also claim you had 15 pounds of gold bars you planned to drop off at the bank too.
