  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
No Genesis Yet!
Hi all,
New to the forum, sorry if this has been asked over and over again but bear with me. I'm currently driving an Infiniti Q50 that I've had since 2016 and it's time to get out of it. Mechanically it's been a great car but the technology is terrible and ruined what could have been a rather enjoyable experience. I'm wondering if anyone can give me their impressions on moving from a mid-range luxury cars like an Infiniti over to a Genesis and what their experience has been like. Equal quality? Better? Worse? Different? How?

The Genesis G70 is a beautiful looking car, and looks to be very well appointed, but to be honest I'm having a hard time with (my own) hangup of it being a Hyundai. I don't mean for that to sound negative or dismissive. I'm hoping to get anyone's honest feedback if they'd move from other brands over to the Genesis and how that went for them?

Thank you!

Get one...you won’t regret it. Rated best reliability...excellent warranty. I dropped Audi for it...that’s saying a lot.

6 months in and I still stare at it and grin every time I get into it.

Thanks for the input! If I can ask, what model of Audi did you have before going to the G70?

Last one was a 2013 A4. But I’ve owned an S4, 2xQ7, S6 and a 90. Love my Audi’s.

I’ve also had a G37 sedan and a G37S coupe.

Interior size-wise, how does the G70 compare to your A4? The A4 has a similar interior size to my Q50.

Rear seat is less room...but not bad. 2 adults back there all the time would be icky.

Trunk is smaller...also not bad.

Up front it’s fantastic.

I moved away from Audi for my Genesis. You wouldn't regret it! I enjoy helping people learn about the brand and my own experience. I help point out that the G70 is not a rebranded Hyundai, but the first true unique Genesis offering. The G80 and G90 came from under the Hyundai nameplate before Genesis was spun off at the end of 2015. Its the same deal as Lexus/Toyota, Acura/Honda, Infiniti/Nissan, and Audi/VW.

Once you're out of the dealership with the G70, you won't really get any reminders that it's a Hyundai. Exterior style, interior quality, and drive dynamic should have nothing that makes you think it's an economy car. Genesis did a good job with being thorough with the quality and not cheaping out anywhere. The only thing that would be reminiscent of Hyundai would be the infotainment, but it's smooth and works well so unless you're used to the infotainment from a Hyundai it shouldn't seem economy. It'd definitely work better than an Infiniti's though lol.

If you have no issue with viewing your Infiniti Q50 as nothing more than a fancier Nissan, then you should be able to quickly get over viewing the Genesis as a Hyundai. Yes they share the same parent company, but I see no reason why that should worry you. There are so many examples of this, like Audi/VW, Acura/Honda, etc. Besides, Hyundai makes some pretty nice vehicles nowadays anyway, they have come a long way since their early days of shitboxes like the Hyundai Pony.

I understand, but have you driven a Hyundai? Going back a few years I owned Buicks. Mercedes, Olds, and the like. I remember the Hyundai Excel and how the paint would wear off. Like you, I snickered at people that bought the brand.

Back in 2006 I was fed up with my Buick and refused to buy another GM car. I looked at Camry, Avalon, and was not impressed, but I took a test drive in a 2007 Sonata and was impressed at what I got for the money. Now I'd had three Sonata and on my second Genesis. Aside from the fantasy of a Rolls Dawn, I have no serious interest in another brand at any price. Good value, good quality.

We love our 2015 Genesis 3.8 sedan and it's the first year gen2. Fantastic car. Smooth and comfy. I almost waited for the G70.

I tell you what - The Q50 is (mechanically) a great car, but holy cow did Infiniti drop the ball on the technology. I also bought the first model year which was a GIANT mistake, the car was in the shop no less than 4 times just for bugs in the software alone.

How is the gas mileage in the G70? I saw quite a few posts in the forum about people having pretty terrible gas mileage. Is that still the case?

My mileage is ok considering the fact that it's a twin turbo V6, I've averaged around 9.5L/100 km (25 MPG) so far in mostly freeway driving. For those worried about fuel economy the 3.3L probably isn't a great choice. But I suspect those that can afford a G70 in the first place should be able to afford the associated gasoline expense.

So you're getting ~25MPG (sorry, I'm in the states :-) with the 3.3L engine? What's your city driving like?

For me, mixed driving (city/hwy), and it really depends on how I drive it. If I take it easy, and drive pretty normally with a rare full throttle zing maybe once per trip, then I'll get about 20-21mpg. If I drive it to have fun, mostly in the city, I'm getting more like 15-17mpg.

3.3 AWD.

I've mostly been taking it semi easy, only partial throttle acceleration typically, which is already more than enough to cause me to leap ahead of traffic from red lights. My commute where most of my driving occurs is mostly highway+freeway speeds, with only a few traffic lights along the way. I've been mostly cruising in comfort mode except when I decide to do some more spirited driving from time to time.

I am only in my first 250 miles--and have mostly taken it relatively easy. I think overall the gas mileage is better than rated (perhaps because Hyundai Corporate was zapped for that mileage issue a few years ago).
On the drive to work this morning--mostly thru the city--was 22 mpg.

I've posted in other spots about this, but my brother has a 2018 Q50 3.0 Sport (300hp) that I've put a good amount of time in. BOTH of us would take my G70 over his Q50. Like you said, its mechanically great, but that infotainment system needs work. I also test drove most of the competitors to this car and would choose the Genesis over them (didn't try the C43 or new M340i).

As far as the Hyundai reputation, if you buy from a nicer dealership, you don't feel like you're in a shitty Hyundai showroom. I thought that the center of the wheel or the nav screen would remind me of it, but I basically forgot about both of those as I drove off the lot.

I like my local Hyundai dealer--which is where I had to go to buy my G70. The facility is fairly new, so it is nice enough. And the people are friendly--so far, so good.
I have owned a Lexus (an ES and an IS) and although the facility of that dealership was a bit nicer, I think I would rate Hyundai dealer higher at present. (Of course the Lexus dealer wrecked one of my cars by backing it into another car and they also said they replaced an airbag when they did not (and then when they did replace it, forgot to connect the horn and the trunk so they did not work)--so I may still have a bit of bias against the Lexus dealer.)
