was wondering if this would be too risky considering the oil consumption problems for 2012 ? i would consider a 2013 rspec, but don't care for the stiffer and harsh suspension. i should get the same or very close power and 0-60 times with a 2012 5.0 vs a rspec but a softer ride with the 5.0.

What is the build date? You might check the forums on the oil. Seems like consensus is that build dates between December 2011, through March-June 2012 some motors had faulty rings that causes the consumption. Looks like most that push for a new motor that had a problem got one.

I have the 5.0. I like its incognito look. It has the same suspension as R-Spec, but has the 18" wheels with Michelin tires (smoother, longer lasting, good enough for 90 percent of turning fast driving). These also get better mileage because of the compound.

I have 19's R-Spec wheels with Blizzak LM60s for winter. Amazing. Mileage drops by 3mpg. Some of that may be colder weather. Not much. I see the difference in MPG immediately when changing.

There is no difference in engine performance. Some have claimed a slightly better "less nanny program" with R-Spec. Hyundai says they are the same.

The adaptive cruise firmware is not ideal. Not smooth or anticipating cars adjusting speeds and gently adjusting. It hits the brakes hard.. Also the closest distance is too far. Too many cars will cut in front of you as a example you in left lane cruising with others faster than right lane. Which will cause it to slam on the brakes. The 2014 Equus I drive had no such issues.

I love the car and have had no service issues.

With right combo of oil, tire pressure, good premium gas, I routinely get over 30mpg manual measures average on the road. Low to mid 20s in town.

I found a GDI intake valve cleaning system which is used every 10k or less. It is inserted into the intake while engine is running. They have scoped the intake valves and they still are clean as a whistle. This is an issue with GDI. No gas with cleaners to clean the intake valves. So the PCV can suck enough crankcase fumes to put deposits on the intake valves. Common issue with all makes of GDI cars. Some worse like BMW and Volkswagen.

BG has came out with a guaranteed system to clean the intake valves on GDI. They are promoting it on the radio and offering guarantee to do the job. Looks like it is a "IV" like system I have used. If you do not keep up with this, someone will have to pull the intake and walnut case particle the intake valves to get the crap off at some point.

I also use a full spectrum cleaner in the gas about once every 3k miles. Several good ones are out the. Techtron, and the like. I have found in multiple cars and SUV, I like the Gumout Complete SUV bottle. Handles up to 35 gallons, and does great job. Notice increase in mileage when using it like this.

If you can get a 10/100k bumper to bumper Hyundai warranty for about 1100-1300, I suggest getting it. For the electronics not covered over 36k miles. And what is not used you can get some of it back... Or transfer to another owner which increases resale value.

Ok... Noticed I did not say much on how I like living with the Genny... Overall it is one of the finest car ever owned.. Does its job as a premier high end car with all the features and quality. A real blast to drive. Is a sleeper too... Looks very good, but does not attract hassles from cops. The stereo is killer.. And the Dolby DVD movies are great (you can get a override for playing these whole in park only).

On a side note. To keep tire noise low, rotate every 3-5k for sure. Also, Road Force balance the wheels/tires. And have a good alignment man your trust check that.

Ok.. Oil... There are tons of opinions on this. I will tell you mine and show results..

Pennzoil Ultra was the goddess of oil in common view in here. Pennzoil has changed their stuff all around recently. I still have some Ultra left. Not so sure I like it as well as others. I does consume a tiny bit of oil using this. About 1/4-1/2 quart every 3.5-4k (I change then). Mobile One Extended, no oil usage. Same for Kendall Platinum, no oil usage at all in same mileage range. I use the factory oil filter when getting the factory service intervals. I have used the other filter that has the what looks to be a better made system with no problems. Someone around here said this filter could be crushed. Maybe if installed wrong. It is listed as approved filter in some circles. Seems like the debate rages on over the filters and oil. One thing that seems common. Those with cars built within the dates, that uses non synthetic oil had more oil consumption issues. Oh, I run 5-20 with no problems as indicated above. Many who tromp their cars hard all the time seem to like 10-30..

How many miles and how much are they asking?

How many miles and how much are they asking?

there's a few 2012's that i'm considering ranging from 12 k miles to 25k miles. price ranges from 27k to 30k. all certified.

thanks for the imput. i'm still researching the 2012's, but i thought that only the rspec had the stiffer suspension, whereas the 5.0 doesn't. edmonds also seems to confirm this.

The 5.0 was made only in 2012. It has the same sway bars, Sach shocks, and supposedly the springs as the R. Hyundai division rep confirmed to be. With that said it does ride better.. Mostly because of the wheel and tire combo. Both the R and non R have a better overall ride than the base V6 I had rented for a couple months before buying. Yes more firm. But controlled..

I think some were confused with the 4.6. It does have softer ride than the 5.0 versions. Might check, it has a smaller sway bar, and different shock and spring settings I have heard. Otherwise, they only have two suspension designs. The GDI V6 and the 5.0 V8 flavor starting in 2012 (beside the 4.6 they had for a time in 2012)

Seems like good pricing considering the raise in prices for 2015. You save about 30k verses a loaded ultimate with a discount. Good luck. Keep us informed.

i was checking the 2012 suspension specs with Hyundai, and they indicated that the 5.0 has a rear sway bar in the back that is 18mm thick, whereas the rspec is 19. maybe that accounts for the softer ride in the 5.0 ?

edit . that thicker sway bar would just affect cornering, no the ride quality.

I'm in the same boat just can't find any within reasonable driving distance. Closest I've found is 4-5 hours away.

Buying a used car is difficult, because you never really know the true condition of the car. When I was in college I bought a used car and got burned by some problems that went undetected by a mechanic. Ever since I graduated college I have always bought new, even if it meant keeping a car for 7 years.

But a good used car can be a real bargain, since the first owner usually takes a big hit on depreciation. Since I am the original owner, I know my current Genesis is in excellent condition, so I am thinking about buying it from myself to solve this conundrum.

good point Mark. I feel the same but just can't afford a new one. We just bought a new 2015 Acura MDX w/ tech, so we are in budget mode. first mid size SUV that i have ever seen getting 28-30 mpg on the road - amazing car.

but since the ins company totaled our 2009, i'm still in the market to replace it. i just hope the suspension on the 2012 5.0 is better than my old 2009 4.6

don't rule out getting a certified with low miles shipped to you. i'm considering it.

I have owned a 2012 5.0 non R Spec for 2 years. A much more comfortable ride than the R Spec which was the reason I bought it. Like the old front grille styling and the rear end over the new.

I love the car and it has been flawless in operation. My only caution would be to look at the car's production date on the drivers side frame. The early built 5.0 engines did have oil consumption problems. Mine was built in June of 2012 which has no oil use concerns. Also the engine soot output disappeared after 3,000 miles.

I also got the 10 year 100,000 mile full coverage for $1,600.00 which I believe is necessary once you realize how much tech is on this car and how much it would cost to fix.

Good luck, you will love the car. Mine is white.

I was thinking about a MDX or RDX for my next car. I rarely drive with more than one other person in the car, so was thinking RDX might be good. I think Honda/Acura V6 engines are using cylinder deactivation (can run on 3 cylinders), which gets very good gas mileage.

You might consider a slightly used Honda Accord. They look almost identical to a 2009-2011 Genesis from the rear.

I have to trade in my 2010 so I don't think that's an option for me. Asked my dealer if they shipped CPO's from other dealers and they said no.

Vehicle manufactured and shipped to Tennessee 5/11/2012

the other one i'm looking at says Vehicle manufactured
and shipped to Texas 10/20/2011 , however, the dealer said it was the 2nd group of production, not the 1st.

I think you will be good with the ride. The 18" wheels and Michelins with not as aggressive aspect ratio are good. As indicated, I notice a harsher ride with the 19s I have too. Heavier wheel that bangs around a bit more on rough road, plus more aggressive aspect ratio..
