Exited the car and tried to lock it with that small button on the handlebar. It wouldn't lock and yelled at me with that warning tone. I figured out it was because I was going on a business trip and packed my backup key fob in my suitcase which was on the backseat. I'm pretty sure if you leave your single key in the car, it will not let you lock from the outside, but this surprised me because my key in my pocket was much closer to the front than this second key in the rear.


So how exactly does the car know if the key is still within the car or in your pocket since conceivably a key in your pocket could be closer than this key in the rear seat was. It therefore just can't be measuring the distance of where the key is.

Sensors detect a key anywhere in short range of the vehicle, inside or out. This prevents locking key inside of vehicle, among other benefits of keyless operation. There is a way to keep a key inside the vehicle if one wishes to have an emergency access:
1 Remove blade key from fob
2 Place blade key in magnetic keeper and place in concealed location outside of car
3 Remove battery from fob and wrap in paper or other non conductive material
4 conceal fob and battery inside of vehicle. Fob and battery need not be in same concealed location
5 In case of lost/damaged original fob retrieve blade key from outside location and use to enter vehicle (alarm may sound)
6 Retrieve fob and marry battery and then replace blade key. Second fob now works as usual

I tested this and it works. There are a few situations where one might want to use the second fob for such unexpected events. I, myself, have been at my car without a key several times in my life. Also had my key with me when I forgot to leave it for someone else and was at some distance from them (and the car) when they needed it.

thanks, but I still do not understand how the car knows if the fob is inside the car or not. Cannot be simply a distance factor, because, like I said, the key in the rear seat was further away from the from the front seat than the key in my pocket, next to the front door, outside the car

The owners manual does not have a diagram of the locations of the sensors in the car for the Smart Key (that I see). Thus I assume that the sensors can locate the key as within or out of the vehicle by simple triangulation, rather than by nearness, distance, strength of signal or other single factor. An educated guess.

Just an FYI, for the G90 you can lock the car with a key in the car by using the fob (but NOT the door handle button). Makes sense since it insures you still have a fob to unlock it.
I’m a little surprised that the G70 and G80 don’t work the same way.

Sometimes you guys are a PITA. Since you mentioned it I had to go find the other fox and try it.

Yes, you can use the fob to lock it with the other fob in the car. I did not know that.
Now I can take a nap.

back to the critical question:
how does Mr. G70 know whether the key is in or out of the car?

I previously figured out that I could lock the car with the key fob button when the other fob was in the car.

I do know that there are a number of different transceivers for the smart key in different locations in the car. I do not know how exactly the information from these different transceivers is used. Clearly, it is able to tell if you are standing near the car doors, near the trunk, or are inside the cabin, or if the smart key is inside the trunk. It seems that it is not 100% accurate on this, but it very nearly is.
