Those with Aftermarket Rims TPMS installation?

Hey guys I am looking at some aftermarket rims for my Genesis and was looking at tire racks website and it was saying that I should have new sensors installed with the aftermarket rims?

It said that I could use the ones currently on my stock rims, but I would have to take the wheels to the dealer to have them calibrated correctly?

Is that correct?

If you purchase a Tire & Wheel Package when you buy new sensors, the sensors will be installed on the wheels at no additional charge. Otherwise, you will have to arrange for installation by a trained technician after your new wheels are shipped to you.

Price for 4 new sensors $343

Is this necessary? Or is it easy to just use the current sensors on the stock wheels and transfer them over?

You can use the current ones you have on your wheels.
Like they said, you have to go to a tire shop to have those installed over to your new wheels.
Since you're using the stock sensors, unless they get mixed with the location, you don't need the TPMS trigger tool to reset them.

$343 for the sensors are too much. Common GM sensors were like $150 for 4.

Is the switching of the tpms sensors twice a year going to increase the wear and tear of the sensor?

This is my first car with tpms so I'm new to the whole sensor swapping thing for aftermarket rims.

Does anybody have any pics of the sensors in the wheel? Just curious

Oh yes, Discount tire can do it. They already have the tools for the sensors as well.
They didn't charge me anything to reprogram them to the car for my Vette.
Procedure is different depending on the model, but generally, it won't take longer than a minute.

I believe you have to replace the stem portion of the sensor every now and then, but not sure how often that needs to be done.
My wild guess is, maybe once a year(every 2 removal/installation) would be fine. But don't quote on me.
You can always ask the experts.

Our cars are just a 12mm or 13mm nut on the outer side and it drops into the middle of the rim. Can be swapped out without a problem. They aren't made to be changed often, so the wear/tear on the nut and washers will be what get you.

I Had the sensors switched from my 17" OEM wheels to 18" wheels I bought on e-bay off a 4.6L Genesis. No calibration was required and they work fine on the new wheels. I tried to have it done at a local tire dealer but was told they don't switch TPMS sensors for fear they might break them. I was told by my local Hyundai dealer that it would cost $60 to switch them but was billed twice that with the service rep swearing that she never gave me that price quote. I no longer get my service there. I called another Hyundai dealer and was told that new sensors cost $38.50 each. Even with installation and balancing, it would probably still be a little cheaper than Tire Rack's price.

I'll probably have discount tire do the install since I'll probably be getting tires through them. Especially if they don't charge anything to put them on.
