If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I got around this evening to plugging my 8GB thumb drive (with MP3 music files on it) into the USB slot on my 5.0. I've used this same thumb drive (a Duracell) in my previous car (an Altima), in my wife's Pathfinder and in the Pioneer deck in my F150 with no problems at all.

When I hit the media button, I get the message in the thread title. The mode button on the wheel will switch between AM, FM and XM, but no USB.

Any ideas?

i've been using 16gig and 32gig san disk drives in my genesis with no problem whatsoever.

I'm technologically inept - a late adopter -, so I'm going to put my CD collection on a flash drive for the first time for the Genesis.

Staples has 256 GB flash drives for $44 - Is this overkill? Would I ever be able to use this amount of memory?

Please note that the Genesis seems to have an arbitrary song limit of about 4K songs.

It may be the drive's format. Mine is FAT32 and it works.

The manual states that it only supports FAT 12/16/32, not NTFS. I have an Ultimate with the 9.2" screen, so I don't know if the base system is different.

If you plug the drive into your computer, right-click on it, and select Properties, you should be able to see which file system.

Forgive my tech ignorance: Do you mean that's what the Jukebox can hold, or that's all the car can read from a flash dive?

And to play music from a flash drive, does it first have to be put in the Jukebox, or can it be played directly from the drive?

And what size flash drive fits 4000 songs?

I'm guessing jukebox holds 4k songs max. A 32GB thumb drive can hold up to 5,500 songs.
You have the choice of either thumb drive or jukebox to play songs from. Takes a long time to download 4 thousand songs... better do it on a long trip. You'll run out of gas in the driveway
Best to download an album at a time when driving. Leaving the thumb drive in, you have to be careful not to bend it and damage the drive slot.

Buy either a low-profile thumbdrive, or buy a short 6" USB extension cord. That way you won't damage the thumbdrive in the console box.

I bought a 128GB USB and for some unknown or undocumented reason, my Genesis could only read 4K of the songs. But let me check it again- that was my initial (faulty) head-unit. I've not only had the the head-unit replaced, I've also updated my Nav software to 9.5, so I will try it again.

So I was reading the 2G DIS manual and it said to plug in a USB device after you start the car or it could damage the device.

Does this apply to thumb/flash drives?

It seems like a pain to take it out of the slot, turn the car on, and then inset it back into the slot. Inquiring minds want to know.

I have the 3.8 AWD Tech model. The manual says it will accept 64 GB max, and around 5,000 tracks. This is true, but there are some other caveats. If your album cover is too large (say 500 kb - my estimate it may be a little bigger) the track will not play. I took one such file (actually a series of files) out of the Genesis, into a MP3 editor where I downsized the album cover to around 250 kb, and the Genesis played it wonderfully.

After creating and playing several USB drives I would suggest that buying anything larger than 32 GB is a waste of money unless the price difference is minimal. I can fit 4,000 typical music files onto a 32 GB drive. There is one exception. If you play classical music, where the playing times are longer a 64 GB drive might make sense, since you won't exceed the number of files limit.

One last comment. Micro Center sells a variety of drives. They generally play well and are less expensive than other drives (Its been a few months but I think I paid $17 for a 64 GB and around $12 for 32 GB. Add a dollar or so for 3.0, which is not necessary for the Genesis, but seems to play OK). I have heard in a few other places they may have a slightly higher failure rate, but I've only lost one in 10 years.:o

The reason mine wasn't reading the thumb drive is that the wiring connector for the USB port wasn't connected. The local dealer fixed it this morning under warranty.

Glad to hear they got your issue fixed!

Having a similar issue. It was reading and playing music from my USB drive just fine, but seemingly out of the blue it stopped recognizing music files on it. The USB port still gives out power, so I assume it's still connected? Even tried different USB drives. And yes, it's in FAT32 format.

NOT TRUE! Maximum number of files which can be stored onto one USB: 8000 (from the DIS manual for my 2013 R-Spec).
I am using a SanDisk Ultra Fit 64GB Low-Profile Flash Drive and I currently have 6655 mp3 tracks on it - all recognized by the audio system.

arg I hit that limit as well, 8000 songs showing, but there is about 9.5K on the disk.. you would think with all the updates its had they would remove that limit.
