  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

well, it looks like Tiger walked away with relatively minor injuries. we'll see what comes out about the crash in the days ahead. but he certainly has a history of single vehicle 'incidents'. thankfully he was alone, no kids in the car.

i assume this is the GV80 he was driving since he was in town for last weekend's Genesis PGA Tour event:

you can see the Genesis logo on the photo showing the passenger door.

Not minor...serious injuries.

Blood all over the airbag. Multiple leg fractures. Had emergency surgery.

^ like i said, 'relatively minor'. leg fractures are not life threatening in most cases. considering the condition of the GV80, he got quite lucky. coulda been different if he T-boned a tree as he was spinning around.

safe to say he's out for this year's Masters...he was noncommittal last weekend.

Not the best advertising...

He survived. Now the advertising people have to get to work and make it good.

Something like the GV80s advanced crash structure, air bags and whiz bang stuff saved his life...

I'm hearing ya!

I wonder what trim it was.

Actually, the passenger compartment looks pretty intact, but you can also see where there was likely intrusion from the engine.

Any publicity is good publicity. There are still people that never heard of a Genesis but will see one now.
There is a quote attributed to a few people over the years.
P. T. Barnum — 'I don't care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right.'

I live in Southern California, and the local news just said the car probably saved his life. The passenger compartment and all the structural engineering designed to dissipate energy did its job. I would say this is a good sign of how safe that SUV was, and just people hearing about it will cause an interest in the vehicle. Maybe Tiger will leave Buick and promote Genesis once he is out of the hospital and fully recovered.

I disagree. I'm sorry the accident happened, but this is great advertising for Genesis. Considering the reports the GV80 rolled over one or two times, the cabin was incredibly intact. Likely saved Tiger's life.

Pretty sure his career is done. Unsure if more surgery is required.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

Oh geez, that doesn't sound good at all. A year and a half ago I fell off a ladder and down a whole flight of (uncarpeted) stairs. Luckily only broke one small bone in one foot, and had a hairline fracture of my ankle. Lucky it didn't kill me, but I was in a boot for months, and couldn't walk normally, in regular shoes, for nearly a year. It still bothers me in the morning, or after a long walk.
Tiger's younger than me and in better shape, but his injuries are a hundred times worse and more complex than what mine were. I feel for him.

Let's not count Tiger out yet. He is an extraordinary athlete. Ben Hogan was counted out, too.

^ there's something that could change the notion of any publicity being good: i read a report there were no signs of braking (i.e. skid marks). if this is confirmed as a fact, it could be possible that Tiger never hit the brakes. this seems weird, but who knows what the circumstances were. it's fair to say he's had his share of single vehicle 'incidents'. the GV80 likely has some sort of 'black box' that can be data logged to see what mechanical/electrical inputs were made before/during the crash. if it is confirmed that Tiger never hit the brakes, then hopefully (for Genesis) the messaging turns to the fact that the car helped save his life. plus, he still got lucky that he never T-boned a tree or had the roof crush...or hit an oncoming car/truck after jumping the median.

another possibility is that of a system failure. if the black box shows Tiger had been hammering the brakes with no system response...i'd say this is not good publicity and Genesis's reputation will suffer, especially a new model like the GV80 which is crucial to Genesis N.A. market expansion.

as a Genesis owner, i certainly hope the facts show it was the former that occurred.

There's no collision auto braking feature (collision avoidance) in the GV80?

Looking at the path I don't see it would do much good. It was mostly open and even putting the brakes on does little if you are airborne. The AEB need something to react to.

A tree?

There was talk about how to test the AEB and putting up a barrier like paper, boxes, and the like do not work. The system is designed to find cars and truck, mostly made from metal.
Look at the terrain. Do you think anything is going to do much good at high speed with little traction in a field? Even if away and alert I doubt he could have stopped in time once he was off the road.
