Time for some reliable tires for winter

Hey guys!
My 2010 Genesis right now currently has 225/50 R18s all seasons on it. And I was at the tire shop today actually and I got a quote for some Nokian Wr G3s. They are all season tires with a winter rating, and I did some digging around online and saw in Canada people use them and a lot of people use them for their BMW's and Mercedes. These Nokian WR G3s though are a 235/45 R18 ... curious is anyones ever put these on and how they feels about them ..? Also me and the store owner did the math its like 4/10s or 6/10s bigger then what I got on my car right now...can't remember off top.. so they should work .. I even called the dealership I picked the car up from and he said I should be safe but he said jump on a forum and ask, he said you guys would be able to give me more feed back.. I also was wondering if I am making a mistake by not buying winter tires or if I take it slow and throw some sand in my trunk should I be good to go? I really only do freeway driving to work and back, and if I need to I have a suburban I can drive but I prefer not to drive it as it guzzles gas. And Im not in the inner city I stay in the southwest suburbs they usually plow the roads and salt them very fast and I drove it last winter for a while but we only had one snow storm in late feb.. which it drove fine just worried about the full 5 months of winter. I know Nokian Hakkas and Michelins Ices are the best but they don't run in my Rim size, so I'd have to buy new rims, and I don't have a spot to store tires .. nor do I want to spend over 1000 bucks on tires.. Please let me know what you guys think about my plan?

I liked the Nokians. Had them on my Sonata, then my Genesis. Good traction, good ride both summer and winter. Just bought a new car and will put them on when new tires are needed.

One difference this winter though. I'm now retired. If it snows overnight I'll just have another cup of tea and watch the traffic/weather reports.

I have a set of Nokian R2 SUV for both the Genny and our odyssey. Love them! Will certainly purchase them again. The WrG3s are not really a dedicated winter tire (but with a more aggressive tread than a all-season) and I've never tried them so I cannot say how good or bed they would be in the winter. However, being Nokian, I'm sure they are still good and seem to fit the bill for your needs.

As for size, the stock size for the Genny is 235/50/18, taking down to 235/45/18 will mean you'll be about 2.5% slower than the speedometer (and in the long run will add more miles to your car). Since Nokians are usually XL rated, you could go with a thinner yet, higher sidewall tire and still meet the Load Index of "97" or higher required for our cars.

Did you have the WR G3s, or the Hakka's? I completely feel you on being retired, I have a family Suburban I could drive, and still living at home and working at the same company as my Mom I could most likely catch a ride with her, but if for some reason I don't I want to make sure my car is driveable this winter.

I have been looking, and its not that they don't make them. Its that they're out and I can not get some by winter. I will certainly bring that page to my tire guy and show him, see if he can work some magic.

Was your car a AWD or RWD? Mines RWD, I am trying to find something to keep that from spinning out on me if possible.

Sonata was FWD. Put them on the 2015 Genesis and used them in the summer but traded before the upcoming winter. The buyer of that car will get a nice car with good tires.

Well i bought a set of the Nokian WR G3's and yeah the price was up there but definitely cheaper them buying new wheels and tires for a set of winter tires, I got the 235/50 Nokian's and it was around 809, but I had to get an alignment which bumped the price up.

will forsure! I can already tell you even on wet ground its better grip, and they ride smooth!
